Help Huawei Y550, Android 4.4.4 - cannot unmute

Today my phone has decided to go on mute and I cannot find any way of un-muting it. If I make or receive a call, then the "mute" microphone icon appears (microphone crossed out). If I press the icon, it ignores me. This means that I can make and receive calls, but no-one can hear me.

Yesterday I set up my voicemail and have successfully received a couple of messages....not sure if this is connected to my "mute" problem or not.

Please, please.....can anyone help?

I know your not going to like what I have to say,But I would try a factory reset.Doing a factory reset fixes issues like this most of the time.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have exhausted other less invasive options - read manual/removed SIM + battery. Looks like it is time to do a back-up.

Unfortunately this did not work, so it sounds more like a hardware error.
