Help Huge increase in Background Data usage in std email app

Anyone noticed huge increase in data usage for the std email app. Happened in last few days. No config changes, no big emails etc. Son has same problem.

What are the affected devices? Both by the same manufacturer or different? Any software updates during this period?

Also, you're not both using O2 are you? Their network suffered a major outage on Monday morning.

Mine is a Motorola G 2nd Gen and my sons is a Nexus. We are both on Virgin and no software updates to my knowledge.
