I am the new owner of a LG G2 (verizon) and while i am a huge cell phone geek, and did hours and hours of research, I don't post all that often on here, or anywhere much for that matter. However, I wanted to post this: as I think I might be able to provide a different kind of opinion than what I have read. I read literally hundreds of reviews online, on just about any new phone. What this review is supposed to be, is giving you opinions on what was missed by the reviewers.
First off- this is a psuedo-review based on 3 days of ownership. I am moving from a GNex, and I did the trick to add a line, and switch phones to keep unlimited data.
So far, I can begin by saying I'm very happy with my phone overall, and I have no regrets choosing this phone over the other options (G4, HTC0ne, Moto X) I had considered a Note III, but I'm used to a Gnex that I carried with no case, and the extra size is sorta hard to get used to. On a side note, I carried a Gnex for 2 years with no case, and never even got a scratch on it. Not even a screen protector.
UI- the UI is heavy compared to what I am used to, but luckily its got one thing going for it. Its highly customizable. Someone was complaining in one review: that the software buttons background was white... but you can change it to black (or pink?). I thought the white did look awful, but getting to change it was great. Also- if you take the time to play with settings and options, its just SO highly customizable. For example, I thought the camera icon was terribad- so I went online found a cool looking steam punk camera, and it let me change it to whatever I wanted. My wife is probably going to be getting the phone too, because its easier when we own the same phone. I'll be able to make her icons 2x2, so its wife proof (she is bad with tech). I like this amount of customization... I'm not sure which other phones do this, but its not something you hear about on the review sites. I either heard that the UI isn't that bad... or its awful. Most reviewers have their opinion.. but I could live with this UI- and all it brings with it. Its a learning curve... but it has enough good to outweigh the bad. You can change SO much, that it doesn't matter if the way it comes out of the box isn't the way you want it. You can spend some time in there and get it just the way you want for the most part. Annoying part- the app icon, looks like crap and you can't change it?
Screen- Godtier screen... nuff said- its amazing. I don't try and see my screen from some oblique angle, so it doesn't matter if it looks weird from the side.
Camera- I love this camera: so much better than the Gnex, and I had gotten great results from it taking pictures. But this isn't a g2 vs gnex... most people want g2 vs (insert new phone here). I can only say this... its a personal preference. I looked at the phone comparisons on various websites, and to my eyes I tended to like the G2 camera more... what the reviews don't tell you, is that while you can use the volume buttons to use as a camera button, they are not in the right place... its too weird. But you don't have to use them, so don't.
Battery- I'm getting amazing battery life right now, but I do notice that whenever I use any charger except the one it came with, it tells me it will be slow charging. (someone tell me what is up with that, sounds like a way for LG to try and sell me first party chargers) Im going to have to see how it goes when I get back to work. My building is a huge faraday cage and no one gets signal in the dungeon where I reside... so my gnex would last 3 hours when it would normally last all day, because its looking for signal. I'll see if this phone can get a better signal and get back to you.
Buttons on Back- SO far its weird, because they are different, and I'm not used to it. But I really think its going be great after you get used to it. However, I've not used them hardly at all because I got the Folio case- and it unlocks it when you open it, and locks it when you close it. I haven't needed to use any of the buttons on the back. In the car dock, its near impossible to change the volume how i have it... but there is a software volume button you can hit- which negates it. Its no harder or easier to use that... its just different.
What else have you seen that you liked/disliked that was not reviewed?
