One bite at a time...
Welcome to the Android Forums!
In the Android world phones aren't Jailbroken... that's purely a iPhone thing! Similar to it's Unix cousins, Android phones achieve super user (administrator) access through the process of rooting the phone.
Rooting is beneficiai lf is provides you some tangible benefit. Examples of things that benefit from root access are:
1. Installing a custom ROM on your phone
2. Installing custom themes on your phone
3. Removing phone carrier bloatware from the phone
4. Installing a tethering app to the phone.
5. Installing a system backup utility like Titanium Backup
