It's probably the phones internal memory, not the SD Card that's the problem. The folks in the HTC Hero subforum may have advice on how to increase.

Most likely the problem lies in two places ... too many, or too large apps, and message boxes filling up. First, see if you have a limit set for text messages, second in you go to menu>settings>storage, it will tell you exactly what your free memory is.
If your internal memory is low, you can either uninstall some apps or move them to the sd card.
