"There is something in the firmware of these devices that prevents Helium from working. This includes the Xperia S and Xperia Z. Sony has disabled backup on these devices completely."

Well.. that sucks donkey ass :(

just want to downgrade my z3 so i can root it and get a good phone

Regarding Bridge, have you tried using another available USB port on the iMac? I assume you're using the data cable shipped with the phone? USB debugging isn't required for the PC Companion version, so I doubt the Mac version is different.

Does the Z3 Compact come with a Sony Backup & Restore app presinstalled? I used that to backup my Z1 during the week. Copied the contents to my SD Card, put the SD Card in the replacement handsets and 99% of stuff backed up successfully.

It even took most of the settings across (including Ringtone assignments).
