Root I can't believe I didn't do this sooner

I finally got the guts this afternoon to root my phone and I'm so glad I did.

I installed the stable CM6 version / Rom Manager / SetCPU

I set a Min / Max for when the phone is being used and a profile for when the screen is off. Hopefully this will help me save a little bit on the battery.

Any other suggestions for a fresh root noob? Thanks in advance for any help given.

For anyone who wants to root, but is nervous, don't worry!

This is the exact guide that I followed

Is it really worth it? What can you expect to gain from rooting (be as specific as you can :P)? Are these custom ROMs really that much better?

Don't you lose the 6.6gb built in memory with CM6? Even the work around to use it is problematic.

Oh yes. I love the way the CM6 ROM looks.

Ive heard using SetCpu helps a lot with the battery. I'll find that out myself here in a few days. From start to finish it took around 30 minutes and that's because I took my time to make sure I followed every detail.

Root that beast!

I'm not sure about that to be honest. If it does, that's really not a issue for me. I don't really store anything on the phone.

I actually tried rooting to the Third Wave ROM at first. It gave me a error, so I had to go with the CM6 for now.

try Frankenrom!

I plan on trying some new ROMS eventually. Right now I'm just happy I rooted and everything is stable on the phone. (for now :D )

I really wanted to flash the Third Wave ROM but it gave me some error. Hopefully the Frankenrom will flash smooth. I'll try it in a few days.

Thanks for the info.

nice job :)

the best thing about rooting is that you can swap roms without losing much.
backup programs keep all your apps safe and it is pretty painless to reinstall everything.

with root you are stuck with hardly any choices. backups are very limited and updating is painful. i can see how people don't want to flash 2.2 ruu because they have to wipe and reinstall everything. with root you are free to try whatever you want knowing everything is backed up and ready to reinstall easily.

not sure why everyone is so afraid of "bricking". it is very uncommon and even if it does vzw will take care of you.

Fixed for you. :)

i tried CM6 today and could not get into CM settings. it would force-close every time

Ive had no issues getting to the CM settings or even changing them. I haven't had one reboot / lock up since I installed CM6.0.1 stable.

I'm not sure how everyone flashes theirs, but I downloaded / flashed mine directly from Rom Manager (paid). I don't know if this makes a difference or not, just thought I would add that.

I finally made the leap on Sunday. And I have to say I wish I did not... I have been flashing roms and kernels non stop sense Sunday. I can't seam to find time to get my work done at work because I keep tweaking my phone... I have an addiction now. (>.<) but I love it and I cant believe I did not do this sooner...

Oh and ps. I still can't believe its not butter.

Yeah, I used to have Windows Mobile for years (going back to when it was CE for pocket pcs) and wasted untold number of hours hacking the heck out of those devices only to end up with unstable builds. I tried to avoid all that and just wanted a reliable device so I waited for the OTA.

Well, my dinc was causing all sorts of pain and unstableness even with the stock android 2.1. It started dropping many calls and rebooting itself several times a day. A few days ago I said what the heck and rooted. Couldn't be happier. I can't believe it's the same phone. Super stable, and I can customize the heck out of the device. No automatic rebooting, my music streams without dropping out, no more bump charging, no grounding issue (finally can use the car dock), no dropped calls (yet). I never used the internal memory, so I didn't even know it wasn't accessible until I read this thread.

I'm actually using the phone the way I need it to function, instead of stressing if my phone will freak out on me.
