I don't think the screen is gimmicky.

Everyone's heard the comment about the curved screen being more of a "gimmick" than anything. After having it for about a week now - I don't feel it being gimmicky at all. While it's true that it doesn't add much more in terms of functionality (so far, just the edge notifications/clock and the contacts thing), I don't feel that it's fair to consider it a gimmick. There's something about the display where because of the curved screen, things just seem to pop out to me a lot more. I know it's an illusion, but it makes using the phone much more enjoyable thus far to me. As a lot of reviews have said - it does add a bit more of a premium feel to the phone, but at a price.

I guess I'm a little tired of hearing that is is a gimmick. It is less of a gimmick than, say, a glass back or a metal frame - and I don't recall anyone saying those were gimmicks when they debuted on the iPhone. Everyone just screamed out how "premium" it made the phone feel. Well, the curved screen does that as well and at least it does add some sort of functionality albeit a small one at this point.

Okay, off my soapbox. :)

(to put this in context, my other phones are a Note 4 and an iPhone 6, and a LG G3. This GS6edge is replacing a GS4.)

It's fashionable to be snarky about anything new and call it gimmick.

I'm with you - if it's not your cup of tea, buy something that is, no need to try to sound clever.

I had the first big screen phone on the market at 4.3" - gimmick.

It had the first kickstand (now popular with cases) - gimmick.

Mini-HDMI and MHL - gimmicks.

By that logic Bluetooth must be a gimmick to me, I don't use it.

Congrats on your Edge, enjoy it in good health! :)

LOL thanks - I really am. There's a lot of newness to this that makes me enjoy using the phone. You're spot on on the items you brought up. I just had to get that out because every time I read it, it made me feel like they're saying that S6edge owners were fooled into getting something.

What is your plan for case, or no case?

That's where I'm debating which model to choose. I'd prefer to use the phone naked at times. But the Edge does pose a bit more vulnerability with doing that.

A gimmick is a useless feature that's included just to be included and for the sole purpose of marketing. In this case, the screen is a product and an integral part of the design of the phone. The main function of the screen is to look good, which it accomplishes well. However, the contacts thing on the side and the flashing lights when the phone is face down ARE gimmicks, as they are app-specific and not particularly useful. The screen isn't a gimmick, but the features around it definitely are. And I'm getting the damn thing, haha.

I had thought about that, but after seeing some of the cases that Spigen had, I figured it wouldn't be a factor anymore. I have the Spigen Neo Hybrid for the S6edge and I absolutely love it. It provides a really good grip and retains much of the sleekness. It adds very little size and it still feels pretty protective.

Because the edge is what it is - the main point of vulnerability would be a horizontal impact to the center of the screen because there is no lip on the edges that would prevent the impact, for example, if it fell square face down on the edge of stairs. There really isn't going to be any protection against that with any case for the edge, though.

After owning it in this case, I have no fears. Without it, I guess I would wonder about the glass on the back, etc.

I would have totally gone for it purely on looks, but couldn't justify the jump in price. I'm sure I'll be happy with my "regular" S6, but that Edge sure is flashy. :)
