I feel stupid -How do I send a text??

After 2.5 days with my droid, I cannot figure out how to send a plain old ordinary phone text. When I pull up contacts, I see options for voice call and IM, but not phone text. I looked everywhere I could find, checked to see that the contact was listed as a mobile number. Someone please take pity on me and tell me the secret !!!

erm.... yeah just go to messages, its a green button on the home screen

That takes me into an IM screen. It is not for texting, can't do a contact lookup either from there.

umm. go to messages, and at the very top it says compose new message.
click.
type.
send.

see that green icon on the left with the smiley face? thats for texting
if that doesnt help you, return the phone
