No, not really. If the phone were set to enable USB debugging, it may be possible to pull off user data using adb commands (not sure if they require the phone to be unlocked) but without a data connection, once the phone is locked out like that, the only option is a factory reset. The good news is that a reset shouldn't delete user files, but it will clear user data including all apps, settings and messaging databases.

Yeah. It's a security thing: if you could bypass the lockscreen then so could anyone who stole a phone. Requiring a factory reset ensures that a thief can't get your data.
