I got the Jelly bean OTA update message today (a few quick questions)

I got the Jelly bean OTA update message today on my SGS3
(a few quick questions)

Q1) It says "some data and settings will be lost" what are they?

Q2) i take it it will remove my CF rooting?

Q3) ...if so will CF-Root for SGS3 v6.4 root work on jellybean 4.1?

Q4) I am using an older version of Youtube. will the new version of youtube "force-log-me-in" and log every video i watch? (Is there a way round this?)
(google creep me out a bit ... i read somewhere it says jellybean has some more creepy watching stuff in 4.1)

Q5) What do i need to back up before the update? (I use titanium backup -good but really complex for simple backup tasks.)

Q6) Do i need to use KIES for the update? will an OTA update fail on a rooted phone?

Q7) anything else i need to know about what the update messing with stuff?

1) you shouldn't lose any data or settings
2) and 3) yes it will remove your root but just re root using the guide in this site. Thats what I did when I flashed the official 3.uk ROM
4) Don't know
5) You don't need to back up. But then again its always a good idea!
6) Don't know
7) I haven't noticed any issues moving to JB.
 
Why would you go through all this instead of flashing a custom ROM based on the 3 UK Update (like the one in my signature)? Its based on official but tweaked to have better performance etc.

Is the ROM in your sig as easy to install, and can I flash it over my current ROM (3 UK) without a wipe?

Everything went smooth
-KIES update
-CF root with ODIN

Had to start odin 3 times

everything still intact but update added loads of synced email addresses from my Gmail . not shown but started to show when i typed an email address

i have sync tunred off - show contacts - chose gmail - removed them-

Youtube app did auto log me in --GOOGLE IS WATCHING YOU

I updated my friends phone - no root

launching the you tube app

AUTOMATICALLY CREATED A YOUTUBE account-GMAIL account LINK

now she will get that Buggy "Create a you tube page" popup that you cant press BACK out of on the browser

Google are pushy with this BS

i could log her out
but the account has been created/linked
without clicking "ok" or "yes" or "no" or "anything"

google are like a CULT or Scientology or something with this AUTOMATIC for the people

My friend said "what have you done, I don't want a you tube account, what have you done..."

I said it was part of
"google-auto-sign-up-to-everything-and-email-everyone-in-your-address-book-policy"

After the update

Titanium backup restored my 3 pages

But i tried adding a page and it cannot be deleted still

Its a bug

some other people have solved this problem with wiping the data for TW
but have to red there pages

Just warning others about it
 
Having the same problem, and luckily I didn't restore to system default but searched for this first. If resetting my device wouldn't fix it anyway, better not go through the trouble of reinstalling everything and setting all the settings again.

A shame this bug wasn't discovered by the Google/Samsung team, as a quick fix update probably can't just be expected in a couple days...

Anyway, really enjoying Google Now and large notifications, so the upgrade is still worth it, but these imperfections really annoy me. #perfectionist

with titanium backup you can
delete the app data
add some pages like 3
back it up

and if it adds another page restore the backup

its the only work around for now

(problem is that - a new feature exists that adds a page automatically if the widget doest fit - great feature if you can delete pages)
so its easy to accidentally add a new page

switching touchwiz between easy and basic mode doesn't fix it -
its a setting for dumming down android. (i forget what its called)
 
Solution to this has been found, in developer settings you have to enable the animation scale. Even setting it to 0,5 speed is OK.

Technically it's not a solution since it will happen if animations are turned off, but it's an easy and good workaround. :)

notes for what fixed it:

I tried this when it first started to happen and it didn't fix


  • 3 animation settings in the developer options
  • i turned all 3 to on 0.5
  • tried to delete a page (problem still exists)

but i tried combinations

  • top one off
  • middle on
  • bottom one off

and tried to delete a page

you don't have to delete the page - just hover over till it turns RED or crashes Touch wiz.

also when it starts working - ie turns red - you can set the developer animations back to 0 again
