I just bought a G1!

Yeah, but what was the first rootable Samsung, and what roms were available for it? How often was the firmware updated? And the first HTC was a Nexus.

Just saying. :)

Yep, there's no doubt about that. Maybe I got into everything too late to experience the growing pains. My first device was a gs1 variant after all.

I agree.

My LG Ally never got a working Gingerbread build. I'm running a 2.3.7 ROM on my G1 right now. Is it a bit slow? Sure, but it's Gingerbread.

You can flash anything to this phone. Even ICS and JB.

Loving this crazy phone!

The XDA wiki for some earlier HTCs used to show the matrix of which firmware went with which roms.

One day someone decided that wasn't necessary. Then they decided to delete the tables.

Unfortunately, wikis are like that.

I was looking for that last night. A buddy of mine had his G1 until 2011 and was acting as my over-the-phone advisor. Neither of us could find it.

Love this old geezer of a phone but it sure locks up quite often during app downloads and updates.

Still though, it is the oldest Android phone running Gingerbread!

This little engine that could is pretty fun to play with. The keyboard has a good feel and spacing. I like having physical keys again. The phone locks up slightly less than often but running GB one aged hardware is likely the cause of that. CM6 was certainly more snappy than the rom I'm on now, but not by much.

I don't expect to run a ROM that ever flies. That's what my Nexus 4 is for.

I'm certainly pleased with my 50 dollar purchase. Totally worth it to have a kind of Android collector's edition phone.

It's aliiiiiiiiiiiiiive!

Feels weird owning a phone running the oldest commercially available Android OS version while also owning one running the newest commercially available Android OS version.

If it matters at all check out this site. They have info on the G1 running Honeycomb, ICS and JB. It is novel to say the least.

You wanna talk about the little engine that could. Take a look at the HTC HD2. That phone came out in 2009 with Windows Mobile 6.5 and because of all the excellent work at XDA they have Android 4.2.2 running on it flawlessly. Now that is "the little engine that could"

The G1 is now my daily driver. Sold my N4 in anticipation of the Nexus 5! Running BeatMod and it is more than enough until I get the N5! Wish me luck!

If it matters I believe you can install CyanogenMod 7 on it. I don't think it is a official port. But it is CM7 none the less.
