I need an idiots guide!

Melonbob

So I'm trying to making the switch from iOS to Android, and have had the s3 for four days now. I've managed to figure out alot of stuff so far, I mean its pretty straightforward, but I do think I need an idiots guide for making the switch. Mainly I'm looking for things to make my experience better, stuff that may be obvious to Android users, but lost on us Apple people.

Example.....is there any fix for the autocorrect? Its ghastly! What widgets/apps are must haves? What should I be buying/downloading......etc etc.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is I'm missing.....something. The phone is gorgeous, but I'm a little underwhelmed compared to the iphone, and everyone is talking about this being the killer. I need to tweak this baby!

as far as auto-correct its one of those things the keyboard learns with time. you could try installing a different keyboard, one option would be Swype, its in beta but it has a more extensive dictionary and much more intuitive. I have never owned an Iphone so if there is a feature you miss just ask I'm sure there is an appropriate substitute.

Try swiftkey 3 for your keyboard. I made the switch from iOS and the keyboard is the best i ever used. Try the free version first to see if you like it.

Ill just name off some tricks and apps I use from the top of my head.

I don't use the stock browser or gallery. QuickPic and Dolphin Browser are my top choice.

I use juice defender for my battery. Seems to work well.

Foxfi is a great app for wifi tethering

I use Go SMS Pro because the stock message app turns the phone screen on with every text. And no setting to turn that off. So it that bugs you (battery life) go with another message application and find the setting

The Smart stay feature on the phone is nice. Phone screen never turns off when your eyes are watching it.

Use Swift Key 3 over stock keyboard

The assistive light widget is nice

Beautiful Widgets is a good app to buy for more widgets

Research Launchers to get if you are not a fan of TouchWiz.

S-Voice is moderately usable if you learn the specific commands. Its not a completely wasted application.

There are ways to disable bloatware on the phone through the settings in the phone. Nice for taking away apps you hate.

Holding down the physical home button and hitting remove all is a process similar to what IOS does when you double the home button on the iphone/ipad.

Thats all I got at the moment. Any questions ask!

All great stuff guys. I downloaded swype, but dont know if I can get used to swiping words instead of typing. Other stuff I will look at for sure! Keep it coming

Smart keyboard gets my vote. It also has a skin for an Iphone keyboard so you wouldnt have much adjusting to do since your coming from Ios.

Vote for swype from me.
Seems odd when coming from a standard typing keyboard but once you get going it's really fast

Another vote for Swiftkey. It is the best keyboard on this planet, period. The prediction is phenomenal. I can out-tweet my friends at conference keynotes. ;)

My only complaint is that I couldn't find a way to disable the space after a period so that I won't get . Com when I try to type .com. But that is the only issue I have and I can live with it.

I love it so much that I actually purchased it a year ago instead of using the free version. The latest version is Swiftkey 3.
