Your contacts are not saved on the SD Card by default. Unless you made a backup of your contacts list to it, it won't be there.
However, I trust by now that you have a google and/or gmail account. Depending on how you setup syncing, you might be able to retrieve
up to 100% of your contacts information by logging in to Gmail, and choosing the
Contacts sidebar category, or logging in on your new phone, whenever you get it, if you have do get another android device. (I say up to 100%, because you might have saved some contacts only on the phone, and not synced those to google as well, even if sync is enabled. Yes, it can be done.)
Now what is really worrisome to me is your statement that
apparently your insurance was cancelled. Your insurance
cannot be cancelled unless requested
explicitly by you, or you violated the terms of your insurance contract by damaging the phone in a way that is not covered under the warranty. (In theory, it's still not cancelled, only that this particular damage would not be covered by the plan). Do notice that this excludes making any software revisions/changes on your device, such as rooting your phone. Indeed, while rooting your phone "voids" manufacturer warranty, it should not affect insurance coverage in any way, shape or form.
Page two of the terms and conditions lists what is not covered by your insurance plan, while page 6 deals with how it can be cancelled. You may access the terms and conditions by
