I need help with a new processor to run Black Ops

Graphics car is XFX radeon hd 4550 1gb gddr2 with a 600mhz core clock and i have 3 gbs of pc 6400 800mhz ram. System requirement labs told me my processor is too slow. you said my AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ 2.6ghz should be fine to run the game? Do you play it and if so what processor do you have?

Most games rely on the graphics chip much more heavily than the CPU. I haven't played Black Ops however...so maybe it's different. My guess is that you could probably play with your system if you don't crank the graphics on high. I'm still running an Intel e6400 and 8800gts 512mb and can play most games just fine. The "newest" game I've played on it is COD: MW2 and I haven't had any issues playing on moderate settings.

the 4550 is pretty weak tbh and is probably your main prob. some games are more cpu intense than others....specially since some of these companies are lazy as shit and half of these games are ports rather than taking the time to code the game correctly.

you also might be limited on what chips you can actually upgrade to since that is an am2 chip depending on your mobo.

I plan on upgrading real soon. probably in the next few weeks. whats a nice video card? maybe SLI? I plan on buying a thermaltake 800watt power supply because the processor i want is 125 watts and i want a better video card. Any thoughts?

I plan on upgrading MB, CPU, RAM and power Supply. I have a pretty decent videocard that will get me by for now until Feb. when i get my tax return. I can spend probably around $500 right now.

well are you gonna want to go sli or xfire? the mobo cost could be the dif...

for a decent 1 card solution board probably plan ~$100, sli ~$150, xfire ~$180-200..ASUS or Gigabyte always

for the cpu i would go AMD 6 core $180-230. you could do quad core $150-160

ram has gotten pretty cheap $60-70 for 2x2gb or ~$120 for 2x4gb....at this point i'd say go with corsair

as for the psu i won't use anything besides corsair, seasonic, pcp&c, or antec...which the 750+ ones cost more towards $140-200

from what i last read the 32nm amd's should be out q1 2011 so there always is the option to wait.

as far as the gpu goes it really depends on how much you wanna spend...gtx 580 is pretty damn beastly on its own...and looks like the 6970 is gonna hit sooner than later.

Lol, sounds like you are pretty much building a new rig.. not upgrading

Except sadly that isn't true in this case. A good processor is crucial for Black Ops. Being the hastily ported console version that it is, the game puts most (if not all) of the load for processing graphics onto the processor, which isn't how it's supposed to work and is the reason most people have lag, terribly low FPS, and general stuttering. Until Treyarch gets a patch out that finally shares the load with the graphics card, your processor is doing pretty much all the work.

That kind of made me realize maybe I should stop playing Black Ops for a while, it might be killing my processor much faster then I want with how much strain it's putting on it.

eh components are designed to last longer than you'll ever use them...as long as you don't have a heat issue running under full load is not an issue. heat more of a factor in itself as far as degradation goes vs actually using the cpu. they go hand in hand kinda. i guess im babbling at this point :( basically saying you really don't have anything to worry about unless you have crappy cooling...even then you'd probably still be fine lol

Crappy cooling = stock cooler?
Thats what I'm using, but I don't think I've ever broke 100F, no matter what I was doing. (Even playing Crysis :p)
6 core processor is win.

well at least stock coolers are better than they used to be lol. yeah if you're under 100f you are more than fine....amd's are tanks.

8gb of RAM is useless and a waste of money. You'll never use more then four, let alone anywhere even close to eight. It's pointless.

Once upon a time, the same was said about never needing more than 640k of RAM.

Thats quite a significant difference.
If you can manage to run enough programs that your using all of that amount up to 4gb of RAM, I would be quite amazed.

it really wouldn't be all that amazing tbh...photo edit, video edit, CAD, virtualization, cgi render, etc etc so on so forth. your uses are different from his so then should be his needs.

my current 4gb of ram is used about at 85-90%
and after holidays.. upgrading to 8gb (swaping out the 2 sticks for 2 sticks of 4gb)
------
also stock amd cooler are still great, big copper base/heatpipe with alu fins

You also have to take into consideration that most average computer users don't even know what CAD stands for. >.>
I understand that it isn't impossible to go over 4gb, just for the average user the likelihood of it happening isn't very high.

8 Gigs of RAM definitely isn't overkill..

It is for me, and probably most people too. I'm sure there are people who could use it though. I doubt I could even use 6gb of RAM, but maybe when I get into graphic/video game design I could. Who knows.

its the same cycle over and over....its too much yesterday, just enough today, and not enough tomorrow. i think from i was seeing last time i looked the price has come so far down on ddr3 the 2x4 sticks are justifiable...

I have 8 G of RAM and a 6 core processor, etc, etc and when I have a bunch of apps open including Photoshop things do slow down noticibly.

If you can manage it I would go with the biggest-baddest processor, RAM & Graphics card, Disk, board, etc that I can get my hands on.

If it's overkill today it won't be tomorrow. ;)
