Root I need help with a recent update

Phone: Evo 4G V
Mods: Hboot 1.57, TWRP 2.4.1.0 (I think), S-On

I flashed a recent update using TWRP. The phone rebooted fine but I get WiFi Error. I think it flashed the latest software version to 2.59. Root doesn't seem to work either. I'm not sure where to go with this. Help me out?

If you took the OTA while rooted with TWRP recovery it will only install part of the update since it requires the stock recovery. If the hboot version is now 1.58 your best bet is to flash a stock ROM updated to the 2.95 (not 2.59 ;)) level. If the hboot version is still 1.57 you have some other alternatives.

Is the hboot version you posted after you tried to take the OTA?

I'm checking right now and it's HBoot version 1.57.000. Thanks for replying and thanks for the correction ;)
OK, that's good.

If you want to get the ROM updates from the March OTA there is a thread here with rooted ROM's that contain that update.

On the other hand, if you are planning getting S-OFF you could relock the bootloader, flash the RUU and go for it now, but it sounds like that wasn't your plan so you can start by flashing the stock rooted ROM and S-OFF later if/when you decide that's what you want.

Make sure you back up the apps, data and settings you have now before doing anything else.

Are you referring to this link?

I thought I tried Deodexed version and it was just stuck on "flashing...." I'm using TWRP to flash. Should I be using something else?

The plan was to just apply the update for the sake of applying it lol. I didn't know things can get this complicated on a rooted device. Yeah I'm not sure of the S-OFF thing as I don't think I will need it. I'm still reading on it...

I think I just bricked my phone. I tried to install that deodexed version but it hung so I took out the battery to reboot. Now it hangs at the HTC screen. I can get into the bootloader. I'm trying to reinstall RUU or flash a ROM from the PC to the phone. Is any of this possible? I relocked the bootloader for some reason in my troubleshooting steps. Help!

YES!!! It's back up!!! I wiped everything etc, but not the sdcard. I ran that 1.13 ruu zip file and just left it alone. no blue status bars in twrp, but it finished and booted!

The current OS version is 4.0.3, radio 1.09. In the future, what's the best way to go about installing any official updates released by HTC? What is the best way?

Simply go into Settings>Software Update and select HTC Software Update.

So I did the whole S-Off thing. Tried to flash the 2.95 ROM but went into a bootloop. Then, I did some digging and found I needed to flash to 1.57.5757 jbear hboot, so I did that, then installed the 2.95 ROM and now all is well! I was going to do a JB ROM install but nothing seemed very stable out there at the moment. Finally, I'm getting somewhere!

Yeah, the 2.95 ROM depends on the 1.57.5757 HBOOT or the 1.58.0000 or the 1.58.5858 HBOOT. If you want to flash anything other than a stock-based ROM, you'll need 1.50.5050 or 1.04.x.

The good thing is that now that you have S-OFF, if something goes wrong with your phone, you can easily fix it.

It depends on your definition of stable, but there are some JB ROMs out there that are pretty darn stable. Maybe missing a feature or two, but stable nonetheless.

I think I'm going to build this 2.95 ROM the way I want it, back it up. Is there a backup procedure that will let me build a ZIP of my current then easily restore it, as I did 2.95 ROM in TWRP?

I'll do the above first, then go for a JB ROM. Which do you recommend? I read about one needing another modification step first which was pretty lengthy which to me, is a turn off lol.

That's a good idea... I did the same thing, just in case.

If you're using 4EXT, it's in the backup | restore menu. Just choose backup, and you'll get a full backup of your system. Since they take up so much space, I usually just move them to my computer and then copy them to the phone's SD Card when I need them. TWRP has a similar option.

The only modification you'd need to do is to flash the 1.50.5050 HBOOT (same as you did the 1.57.5757), then wipe everything except your SD Card, and install the ROM as usual. Dirty Unicorns is nice, MidnightROM Jellybean is nice, and PACMAN is nice. Try them out to see which ones you like best... I like the MidnightROM Jellybean ROM, but it's just a personal choice. Between ROM switches, just wipe everything except the SD Card and install the new one after that... easy as pie. If you don't like any of them, wipe everything, flash the 1.57.5757 HBOOT and restore your backup.

One thing to keep in mind is that some of the ROMs will require you to install a "GAPPS" package - this is the google apps, like gmail, the play store, etc. If the ROM download page mentions this, download it and flash it after you flash the ROM.

Just remember that after switching hboots, you must clear cache, dalvik cache or you will bootloop.

Thanks, friend. I'm going to give them a shot now that I feel like I'm getting the hang of this madness. Do the Dev's of these ROM's keeping them current and up to date?

So I took the plunge and went for the MRJ. Flashing to 1.50.5050 was a challenge. I use the image on Unlimited.IO but it failed multiple times when trying to flash. I think the error was somewhere along the lines of a bad checksum. Anyhow, I used the ZIP file in the tutorial that Remanifest wrote which seemed to do the trick.

I'm not sure if I like JB, LOL. I like how it's super smooth and responsive and tweaks up the @$$. I liked the mail client on the ICS for VM ROM instead. I'll use it for a few more days. Overall, I like the feel of it and I guess it will take a little getting used to. Thanks everyone for your help!
