Usually flashing just a kernel requires cache and dalvik wipe before flashing. (there should be flashing instructions at the dev's thread or site)
Always nandroid first.
Do you have the Nexus 6?
I wiped my cache. But it kept crashing. I think it was because I sent my CPU frequency too high. They give you a opinion on what maximum frequency you want to operate at.
I've moved this into the Nexus 6 root forum so others with your device can help
Perhaps take Slugs advice and edit your thread title to something more descriptive of your issue to attract more help
Just flashed my 1st kernel the other day & found that compatibility is of utmost importance.
