i cant find anything solid on this. I flashed 2.3.5 to my phone from 2.3.3 and that worked fine. Didnt need to root. Just did it via Odin and download mode.

If i want to get a custom rom, is it the same procedure? Im on Bell network. Canada

I think that you were able to update to the new ROM, as it is a stock ROM. If you want to put custom ROM's on your phone, then you usually need to root.

ok i gotya. i remember reading something that you can flash a custom rom if its pre-rooted without rooting first.

Im not against rooting. Ive done it on this phone before. I guess my next question is how do i flash the new rom? Root, then just do it through odin? Like put the PDA file in and press start as per before?

I always find different roms but rarely do i see instructions or whether or not they are actually compatible with my version of the S2. Just dont want to brick is all.

Litening ROM auto rooted but this is one of the few custom roms that are in .tar format and must be flashed via Odin.
All others I've ever downloaded are in.zip format and are flashed in cwm recovery.
You must be rooted to have cwm recovery on your phone.
