I want to get an HTC Evo, but maybe I shouldn't?

After doing a lot of research on Android phones, I've decided to switch my Nokia E63 for an HTC Evo, when it is released. Everything about that phone looks great, except it's future.

From what I understand, HTC has a nasty habit of not updating it's phones after they are released (which is also the reason I'm ditching my Nokia) and Google is only gona be able to push out major updates to non-stock Android phones starting in version 2.2.

Mix that with the fact that 2.2 is supposed to be coming soon, I feel that if I get the Evo it will be outdated on arrival.

So what do you all think? Is the EVO worth getting, or should I just wait for the next generation of 2.2 phones.

To add insult to injury, I promised to give the Nokia to my brother in mid-May, so I'll be stuck with a 6 year old flip phone until I what ever phone I decide on getting is released.
 
I wouldn't worry about it. I think it's the carrier that is pushing Android updates, not the phone manufacturer.
 
Yeah, there are a lot of people complaining because their phones don't get the latest version and they blame HTC. Unfortunately, I think the carriers are as much to blame since there are plenty of updated ROMs floating around. People just don't feel like installing new ROMs by themselves. The entire HTC facebook page is full of people throwing tantrums because they don't have 2.1 on their Heroes yet despite the fact that there are a ton of unofficial 2.1 ROMs for the Hero if they are really that impatient.

Evo will be a good phone out of the gate so if it doesn't get some future update for some reason, you can bet that someone will port the new version over. xda-developers have been doing it for years so you aren't at the mercy of HTC or your carrier for updates.
 
fragmentation is definitely still an issue right now. i think evo might ship with 2.2 and that will be the beginning of the end of fragmented android-with only 2.1 and 2.2 being in circulation. sprint has too much riding on this phone and the 4g network. as long as google and htc can set up android updates with sense ui just like vanilla android.
 
Also, google has intimated that they will begin to fight fragmentation by slowing major version updates, and simply releasing updated features as user-downloadable apps in the App Market.

This will help take the carrier out of the equation.
 
Yeah, once fragmentation is not an issue, we will see quicker updates across all Android phones.
 
Unlike Hero, I'm pretty sure EVO will have less bug when it is released. No, EVO will be in 2.1.
 
I'm hoping for 2.2 too, I don't trust Sprint and HTC to do anything timely. I got the original Sprint Touch and waited a year for a new ROM. I also think there will be WIMAX issues out of the gate!
 
As some others have indicated here, do some additional research on Froyo's new features. The ability to push new updates without a whole OS overhaul is a big deal.

In my past experience, HTC's been slower to put out new updates to their UI overlay (TouchFlo3D for WinMo). But Google is the primary dev behind Android & they're cranking out code like crazy, unlike Microsoft & their Windows Mobile series.

Then there's the carrier who usually further tweaks any OS release. I seem to recollect Verizon being notoriously slow at getting various releases approved.

Really the only way to truly avoid this is get a Nexus One.
 
I will take comfort in the fact that I will be running the stock rom for MAYBE a month after release, after which there will likely be many custom roms to choose from, and will be updated very quickly.
 
Unless 2.2 (or whatever version it will be when it's officially released) is drastically different than 2.1, I don't see the Evo being "outdated" when it's released. 2.0 wasn't drastically different than 2.1. Based on Sprint's developer website, it looks like 2.2 will have 4G support built into it, unlike having to add it to the 2.1 OS (much like CDMA support was added to 1.5, even though Google officially added it to 1.6).

Sprint is betting big on this EVO device. Or else its stock will tank and someone will lose his/her job. You will be surprise on how good and fun to use this device. They purposely push both Hero and Moment 2.1 ROM updates closer to the EVO release date. Otherwise, everyone will accustom to 2.1 UI Flows, will not find EVO as fun anymore.
 
2.2 won't give anyone 4G, a kickstand, a forward camera, hdmi out, or a 4.3 screen. So I could care less about 2.2. :D Bring on the Hardware!!!
 
One of the reasons I decided on the Evo was because it was an HTC device. Now you're thinking yeah but they usually are pretty slow with update releases, although true it's also false.

See HTC submits a ROM to Sprint. Sprint then has to add all their spam on it quality test the Rom and ship it to the customer, but in that small gap where HTC releases to the carrier they usually go back and forth back and forth, as in the carrier sends the build back many times. HTC ROMs have such a good track history of getting leaked in this process and that's where it eventually gets into the hands of the ROM cookers over at XDA, you see I don't expect Sprint to ever make a timely release but as stated above there will be cutting edge ROM builds with consistent updates from the community and that's really what I'll be running on my phone.

I've had 2.1 Eclair on my phone for almost a week and a half and Sprint has yet to update the Hero or the Moment so as far as depending on the carrier... umm... yeah!
