i want to install custom firmware on htc hero g2 touch using clockworkmod recovery hi, i have an htc hero t mobile g2 touch
through this forum i will tell u what i have achieved, what i want to do and ask some question and hope that some experts would come and answer them.
i'm new to this android, i wanna install a custom firmware and i don't wanna brick the phone while doing it. i have done a lot of research and have some final questions to which i need straight and easy answers so that i do not brick the phone.

i upgraded the HTC hero using official ruu and now it is

Firmware version
Android 2.1 update1
Baseband version
63.15.55.06MU_6.35.13.09
Kernal version
2.6.29.-5f74b252
htc kernal@and18-2 #1
Build number
3.31.110.1 CL183682 release-keys
Software number
3.31.110.1
Browser version
webkit 3.1

i have rooted the htc hero g2 touch:). to do that, i have used universalAndroot apk selecting superuser for android 2.0 to 2.2.
rooting wasn't that hard.

now i want to install the clockworkmod recovery without using the computer, because my fastboot doesn't work with the computer. i have done everything right but maybe there's something wrong with my data cable and i couldn't find a data cable for htc hero in my country. Using clockworkmod recovery u can install a rom placed on the sdcard without needing to connect to the computer.
i have the rom manager apk installed and ready to use, all i need to do is tap install clockworkmod recovery, select htc hero when it asks to choose phone model, then it will automatically download the correct version of clockworkmod recovery img and then reboot to install.
My first question is: Is there any risk of bricking the phone while replacing the stock recovery with clockworkmod and how do i avoid that if there is?

During my research I found a site where someone said that I have to unlock the bootloader to install a custom rom. On some other site I have read that someone is already using a custom rom and doesn

Ok, first, don't do anything more before you damage your phone.

The HTC Hero and the T-Mobile G2 Touch are different phones.

Only use the goods that match your phone.

What do you have?

well when i boot into bootloader-fastboot this is what i see:
HERO CVT SHIP S- ON
HBOOT-1.76.0007
MICROP-010f
TOUCH PANEL-SYN0104
RADIO-6.35.13.09

I have checked from the internet it looks like the htc hero and everything.
it was bought from t-mobile so a t-mobile logo is printed above the display near the speaker.
when it starts the phone, the boot screen is like this: G2
____________________________________________Touch

_________________________________________....T-mobile....

it was bought from uk

oh and i also read somewhere that someone flash a htc hero g2 touch with a generic rom of htc hero and was using it for a while

Ok, if you take out the battery, is there a printed description of the model?

And whatever you read, I see this often, it's the fast way to a brick, just a mismatched file and it's done.

Thank you for spending ur time here. i very much appreciate it.
under the battery i see
Hero100 5VDC...... Made in Taiwan
Manufacturer HTC Corporation

MAC: 0023763F5F5F
and pin, serial number and imei

i have almost no knowledge on these android customizing and stuffs, feel free to advice me in anyway thanks

I am happy to help! :)

Ok, now that we are sure together, I will move this over the Hero rooting forum.

The folks there are knowledgeable about the right software for you.

Kindly refresh your page in a few minutes and you will be over there. ;) :)

If no one answers after a day (I don't think that will happen) please click my name to send me a private message and I will look for someone to help.

Cheers!

PS - I fixed the title.

i am continually searching the internet and i came across hero200
my phone is htc hero t mobile g2 touch(gsm)
under the battery HERO100 is printed
would installing roms for HERO200 on my HERO100 do anything bad or is there any big difference between the HERO100 and HERO200?

The Hero200 is the American Hero for Sprint, a carrier that uses CDMA radio, not GSM like yours.

Last person I saw here mixing up those two had to buy a new phone.

i downloaded a hero200 rom, i'll delete that right now, thanks
i wonder when i'll get answers to my questions.
i wish there was detailed guide for new rooters like me

Hi there!

Just to clear up the confusion as to what phone you have, you have a GSM HTC Hero. You bought a T-Mobile UK model, which they decided to call the G2 Touch. It doesn't make any difference though, it isn't any different to any other GSM Hero except for the name.

It is super easy to install a custom recovery without using a PC, and I wrote a guide to do just that a while back:

You will require: A phone running the official 2.1 firmware, that has been rooted using an app such as Universal Androot.

Preparation:
- Download your firmware of choice in .zip form and put it on the root of your .sdcard.
Note: Don't try to extract any .zip files during this process.
- Your ROM may come with other .zip files, such as themes, kernels and so on. These should go on the root of your sdcard too.
- Make sure you have anything you need backed up. Everything on the phone's internal memory is going to be wiped completely. (The sdcard, SIM card and anything backed up to google are safe). So contacts (if they aren't google/sim contacts), apps and sms messages need to be backed up, for example. Titanium Backup and SMS Backup & Restore are useful apps in this situation.
- Make sure your battery is fully charged!

Installing a recovery image:
- Install 'ROM Manager' from the market (the free version is fine).
- Launch Rom Manager and pick the option to 'Flash ClockworkMod Recovery'. The superuser permissions app should pop up and you should click 'allow'. Let it finish and reboot.
Note: If the SU permissions app doesn't pop up, make sure you have 'USB Debugging' enabled in your phone's settings.

Flashing the new ROM:
- In Rom Manager, you want to 'Backup Current Rom'. Do not skip this step.
- Your phone will go into the recovery menu, backup your current firmware and then reboot back to android.
- In Rom Manager, hit install ROM from SDcard, find your rom's .zip file and tap it.
- You'll get some options here. You can skip the option to backup your rom, as that is already done. But make sure to tick the options to wipe data and the cache.
- Let the phone run, and eventually it will reboot into your new firmware.
- Now you can flash any extra required .zips for your phone via the same method, just don't backup your ROM or wipe data.

Note: When flashing radio.zip files it is absolutely vital you do not lose power or pull the battery whilst flashing. This is almost guaranteed to permanently brick your phone! Radio flashes do not behave like any other flashes, so do not pull the battery out even if it appears to be misbehaving.

- Install TB and any other backup apps used from the market, restore, and have fun :)

hi i have faced a problem with the clockworkmod
after installing the rom manager, i permitted it for the root thing then on the rom manager, tapped the install clockwork, it downloaded and installed. i rebooted straight into the recovery to see if it got installed. then i rebooted back to android, after that, everytime i entered the recovery, it showed a phone icon with a red warning sign. i repeated the clockwork installation, agian i was only able enter the recovery ones and after that it kept showing that warning sign. i also saw this warning sign when entered the revovey after i first rooted clockworkmod installed. now im guessing it wasnt properly rooted or maybe the superuser version is not correct or something but I did choose su for android 2.0 to 2.2.
and also I used a battery tool which need root access, but when a tried to use a function of that tool which needed su, the tool said, failed try again.
is it a problem in the rooting or is it because I entered the recovery immediately after installation.
please help because i can't continue to flashing unless I'm absolutely sure that my recovery is perfectly working.

my problem with the recovery is solved.
well it appears to be solved, I was able to enter the recovery Manu multiple times before posting here.
the problem was with the rooting or I think it was.
what I did was unrooted then rooted again and then rerooted i.e unrooted ones and then rooted twice, after that I restarted the phone. And then rebooted into the recovery several times to check if the recovery is fixed

Yeah, that red triangle screen is the stock recovery image on the phone. (Android has one by default, it just doesn't have the same set of features as a custom recovery image). So it does sound like the root hadn't worked.

Glad you got it sorted :)
