Root I want to Root my phone, need help O_o

FR212

Newbie
I have a Boost mobile HTC One SV with the latest software 4.2.2. I figure it's best to root my phone now, since there won't be anymore software updates. Anyways, rooting HTC phones seem like a pain. I recently unlocked the bootloader through HTC website. http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/

I'm stuck trying to find a recent guide to root my phone after that. Any help, would be nice.

It's actually really simple :)

You just need to install the twrp recovery found in this thread:
http://androidforums.com/showthread.php?t=845477

Using fastboot with the command

Code:
fastboot flash recovery {name-of-recovery.img}

Where "{name-of-recovery.img}" is the name of the recovery file you downloaded

Once it's installed, simply boot into recovery and make a backup ( it's always good to have an untouched backup of your device ;) )

Once the backup completes, select reboot system and you should receive a prompt stating that you are not rooted and It will ask if you would like to install superuser. Select yes and that's it. You have root. :)

I think a mod is in the works to swap your internal memory and your sdcard, but hasn't been released yet. I think i remember it being mentioned as a feature in a rom that's is being developed

Ok, so I ran through some trouble and I currently have no OS and my backup is gone. :( please help.

I have an UNLOCKED Bootloader and Recovery (TWRP) is working.

How did you lose your backup?

I have only 3g tonight, so i can't upload a functional backup at the moment :(

And are you are s-on? If so you can't use the ruu to fix your phone because it is a previous version of Android... :(

Give me a bit and I'll see what i can come up with

I'm hoping my phone doesn't have hardware issue. My phone kept freezing and restarting before and after rooting. Usually getting stuck in the HTC logo screen. I should have saved the backup to my SD, which I didn't do. :(

I'm on S-ON

What did you do to erase the internal memory?

You mentioned removing a bunch of apps... i imagine that's why you are stuck right now... When you select "restore" in twrp, what does it say?

Also, I've messaged another guide to try and get you a working backup that you can restore through twrp... So, once he replies, we should be able to get you up and running.

Hey man, sent you a PM. Extract the zip and you will find the needed files to restore your device via TWRP. Such files like ****.emmc.win and ****.ext4.win. Because you are S-On you will not be able to use the boot.emmc.win file to restore your boot, but given your situation you may not need to use it anyways. However, if you do, then rename it to boot.img and install it to your boot partition via fastboot:
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img

Thanks, guys. So far, all good and I didn't have to use boot.emmc.win file. Will keep your backup in my PC, for sure. :)

Btw, your TWRP backup files has my phone running with no issues (knock on wood). :)

Okay, now I'm removing a bunch of apps. Any system app that safe to remove that I may want to remove, any suggestions? Majority of what I'm removing is the keyboard - language packs, wow, so many!

Fair warning, because you are S-On, if you delete any system apps or files or even modify them, they will not stick. The moment you reboot it will all be restored. I recommend going in to your TWRP recovery and using the file manager to delete them. They should stick when you reboot then.

Your stock kernel has write protection which is why. The TWRP recovery has a custom kernel with write protection removed.

Otherwise, you will need to be S-Off.

Cool, is there a list of system apps that are safe to remove through TWRP recovery?

K2_CL with 4.2.2 only!

Write Protection Removed (Kernel)

Grab it from the link below:

If installed successfully you will see the following on your phone:

This should be helpful to you.

As for a list? Mount your system as RW, then freeze your apps and see what happens. If all is well, remove it or them. To freeze, simply rename the apk or file. For example, .apk to .apk.kpa or .odex to .odex.xedo. Changing the extension prevents the file to function as well as preventing the OS from using it.

Sound like trail and error. I'll consider this, if and when I'm running low on internal storage. Thanks, anyways.

I adapted this list from THIS POST (for the k2_ul variant)

This list should be safe to remove. But, be sure to have a current backup just in case :)

I'm surprised, my HTC One SV for Boost Mobile has a new system update: 3.05.653.4 (16.62 MB). I'm rooted and want to keep root. Should I ignore the update and keep root? or can I force the update and keep root?

While installing the system update my phone restart and goes to TWRP Recovery (2.8.0.1). My phone won't let me update. Is there a way around this while keeping root and my data?

I assume the update doesn't work because I deleted a couple of pre-installed system apps. I did made sure to make backups, except I didn't copy IMEXT9Swedish.apk. :( Any help would be great, thanks.

Must flash your stock recovery when you accept an OTA.

Its booting to twrp because ota updates are installed in recovery, but stock recovery. You don't have stock recovery any more. Even if you flash stock recovery the update will likely fail if you deleted system apps. You can edit the updater script in the update to make it flashable in twrp. You have to remove a lot of assert props from it. All of them actually, lol.

Removing a lot of assert props seem like trouble for a minor system update. On second thought, can I reset phone, then update, then root? Or do I have to transfer back the system apps I removed first?

The most straight forward way would be to restore your stock backup then reflash the stock recovery with fastboot and simply check for the update and let it install.

If you don't have a stock backup, you can restore the phone to an out-of-the-box condition with the 4.2.2 ruu

Once the update is complete, just use fastboot to reflash twrp then reroot and you should be good to go

Nice, I'll follow your instructions and let you know how that goes. Thank you.
