I wish I could just pay $$$omeone to port older stock Samsung themes to my Moto X

You can use a custom launcher such as Apex or Nova (both launchers have free versions) and customize the appearance of your phone. I use Nova Prime and here's a capture of my home screen:

The four together allow me to take care of most of the background problems. The white background on a Droid Turbo is simply painful.

I use Nova Prime and Textra.... and Type email.

all give me black backgrounds which helps a lot in preserving battery power, and my eyes...
 
Thanks to posts in this thread I switched from my previous apps to Textra SMS and Type Mail (formerly Blue Mail). I looked at Pixel Phone Pro but it appeared to be very similar to the app I'm using, KitKat Dialer.

@androidlover9, my phone's UI is always a work in progress, but I'm an older guy and I need something that's functional and easy on my eyes. I also can't type with my thumbs like the younger folks do.

I can definitely see what you mean, just booting this phone is blinding because of the white boot up screen... I really don't like all the white that comes with Lollipop, it's too bright and blinds your eyes.
 
Yeah, I like the pretty globe in he start up but the background definitely needs to be darker. anything but stark blinding white! I use aquamail as I can change the background to black there. Much better on my poor eyes. And I love Textra.

My real concern is not the desktop. that is easy to modify

My real concern is the dialer, the contacts list, and the sms text message formats.

Hmm... You could just download replacements? Textra is what I would recommend for an SMS/MMS app, I personally would just leave the contracts and phone alone (but that's just me)

In your original post you show KitKat Dialer, an app that combines a dialer and contacts list and is available from the Play Store. As others have suggested, either Chomp or Textra should meet your needs for an MMS/SMS app.

@Thom, when I first looked at Pixel Phone Pro it appeared very similar to KitKat Dialer. I just took another look and Pixel Phone Pro offers an extensive list of customization options. Also, it's on sale for $1.49 so I bought it.
 
The real advantage ...

One of my pet peeves is that every time there was a new system version or new phone there was another phone dialer that had to be relearned.

Pixel Phone Pro can be moved with its saved configuration information from one version to the next and from one phone to the next.

I use the Glossy theme and selected Black background.

With a combination of Exdialer and an extra theme called "elegant black", and Chomp, using a theme called "Skyler Sha" I am really close to what I want.
Only problem, (minor one) is when I dial out, or receive an incoming call, it defaults back to the default moto x pure app for that.
Oh well. This is good enough.

Glad you found apps that met most of your needs. I never tried ExDialer but did you try KitKat Dialer and Pixel Phone Pro?
 
NO. I settled on these two. I still wish there was a super simple ROM that covered this. It still goes to the default phone app after I have entered a number using exdailer.
