I5700 Galaxy Spica/lite officially gets Android 2.1

Thought the update would give me access to more home screens, but doesn't seem to. Is there anywhere where there is a guide or manual for 2.1

I've seen a few vids on youtube where people have a microphone button next to the spacebar. Is that a 2.1 feature because I don't seem to have it.

After reading your posts I have just found the microphone facility. Pretty cool

Its a button next to the google search bar or whenever you search i.e. in youtube. Just hit the button and it asks you to speak and then uses the word(s) to search. Its pretty accurate if you speak clearly. Quite impressive!

The only problem I have found so far since I have upgraded is when I start Youtube from the icon, I get an error

The error looks like an Android O/S error. I can clear it with back button and then it all works fine.

Regards

Jerry

tiggybot - as far as i'm aware the stock launcher samsung uses - "pantheon" - doesn't allow more than 3 screens. i'd recommend downloading and using a replacement launcher - i've tried ADW launcher and LauncherPro and would recommend LauncherPro out of these two. this will give you the option to add more homescreens (as well has have a scrolling app dock! which i find hugely useful). it's also much faster and more responsive than pantheon - which is for the most part terrible

no i don't think so - as far as i recall i installed a replacement launcher before i rooted my phone. just do a search for launcherpro or adw.launcher in the market - if it shows up and allows you to download then you know you're good

hi guys, its my first post and sorry for my english, yesterday i have sent my spica to vodafone service in romania ,and if it isnt anything official on samsungs site in romania ,i asked them if they can update my software from 1.5 to 2.2 and they said YES!maybe this is the way to update in an official mode in countries where is no official update.

Thanks I ended up going the LauncherPro, so far I'm very happy with it. Glad to get rid of the battery hogging pantheon as well.

I was already on the latest version, I actually had to downgrade to get it to work. So now on version 4.0 with no navigation, but gps now working.

'll share my experience in some detail:

There are 4 steps. Download-Verify-Upgrade-Finish
It locked on step 3. 0% progress. I waited 10 minutes.

I took the battery out of the phone.
PC Studio recognized something was wrong and gave me instructions on how to recover from "critical failures" (or something like that). It told me to
i) disconnect the USB cabe
ii) boot up the phone in recovery mode (giving instructions on how to do that - volume down, camera + power buttons)
It said I would get a 'recovery message' and that one recovery is complete I should continue.
(At this point, NPS studio was presenting "next" and "finish" as options - I left NPS alone and focused on the phone)
However, my phone didn't do into recovery mode when I followed the 3 button power on sequence, it went into a black screen with a bright blue sim icon, and a "downloading" message. Having seen some flashing tutorials on the web, I recognised this screen as a good thing.
So I plugged the USB cable back in and click "next" on the NPS window.
NPS then tried again from the start :
- Step 1 was already done (downloading the firmware), so it skipped that.
- Step 2 it did again (checking validity of download)
- Step 3 then progressed quickly (only a minute or so) for the actual upgrade.
- Step 4, It finished.

The the phone re-booted which took a while. It stayed on the Samsung logo for quite some time (over a minute) then came to a basic home screen with the "initializing" message.

Then, all was well.

I notice someone else just killed NPS in task manager and tried again. Seems a bit easier than my method.

Although lots of people are having trouble, I get the impression that if you try again, it'll work.

Good luck.

Yeah I got it to work on the 2nd attempt on both mine and my brothers phones. It seems the 1st try just 'primes' the phone for an upgrade :D

i am the happy owner of samsung spica 2.1 ,its up dated in romanian vodafone service,is nice ,better and faster then 1.5

Thought so too. At your home screen just push the menu button, then edit, then you can add lots more home screens.

Im also having a problem with the speech-to-text thing. Mine doesnt give a mic option, any help?

I'm tired of this... Used to follow these steps for like at least 10 times, nothing... Everything is the same, step 3 freezes at 0%. If I do remove the battery, turn on into Recovery, which is as you said sim card icon with a download message the software prompts me to do the recovery thing, downloads something then unzips verifies and after that the same thing, freezes on step 3, the same old good 0% progress... Have no freakin idea what else could be done, have tried this on two separate computers, identically the same situation no matter how many times I try...

Any ideas?..

lol, tired one more time after posting that post above and managed to update with fluency, haven't done anything differently... So I guess you just have to try zillions of times until you get what you want ;].

to add new homescreen press menu button and then edit, to add a screen press the plus sign. to do this u must have 2.1 or higher
