What does the Red Heart on a picture do. I clicked on the heart on the pictures I wanted to print so I had selected all I wanted. The next day I went to look for all the pictures with the Red Heart and there were none. What does the selection to Red of the heart do?

That is presumably a feature of the app you were using to view the pictures, since it's something I've never seen in almost 11 years of using Android.

So if you can tell us which app you were using it will be easier for someone to help. Even if it's one which came with your phone do not assume it's the same as on anyone else's phone: manufacturers load their own apps, so tell us the name of the app and, if it's something generic like "Gallery" that you didn't install yourself, tell us which phone you have.

The phone is a Samsung SM-S367VL Galaxy J3 Orbit, hardware version S367VL.04. As an update, pictures were selected in the Gallery turning the heart icon RED. The phone was turned OFF, the next day when turned ON all pictures selected by RED Hearts were no longer RED.
There is no specific app I am using, just the built in Gallery.

Still sounds like a 'favorites' selection of some sort, or maybe a way to select photos (one or multiple) for sharing or grouping.

if you find near the bottom of samsung gallery there should be the "hamburger" or the 3 lines.....select that....then there should be a favorites tab......your favorite photos will be there.

just an fyi i would recommend that you use google photos. it backs everything up to the cloud and you do not have to worry about ever losing your photos again.

If you'll forgive me for being pedantic, the built-in Gallery is a specific app. And the Gallery is one of the apps that's most likely to vary between devices, since most manufacturers have their own version.

So I'm afraid I can't help as I don't have a Samsung, so have no knowledge of that app. But @ocnbrze does, so I'd follow his suggestion for how to use it.
