Gingerbread used the Pico TTS engine which sounded pretty bad.
ICS uses a Google TTS engine according to the settings. If you listen to a sample of it in the settings menu, it sounds pretty bad too. Not quite as bad as Pico, and somewhat different, but still pretty bad. However... in ICS if you use navigation, the speech is incredibly natural sounding, and it is obviously NOT the same TTS being sampled in the settings.
So what engine IS the nav using? And why not have that applied as the standard engine for the whole system?
