Root ICS update and gsm/global capabilities.

There it's a place you might be able to switch it on. Dial *#*#4636#*#* it should open a hidden menu.go to Phone info.scroll down to where it says LET/cdma/evdo click it abs it has afew options that let you choose gsm
 
It's my understanding that the phone has the capability now, BUT your sim card is what determines what VZ allows you to connect to, so if you don't have a global sim/account, you can't connect to GSM.

We used to have global air cards at my old job through verizon. They had Vodafone sims in them.
 
On all my previous phones that has SIM slots, I was able to call Verizon and SIM unlock them. I called Verizon today to do the same and they said that Spectrum is not a GSM capable phone!!!

As far as that hidden menu is concerned, I can change that but it does not survive the reboot. I tried Cincinnati Bell SIM card and I got no service and a red exclaimation SIM error.
 
The rom, more specifically the radio interface layer (RIL) calls out GSM commands. It does support GSM cards. All the info I have those points to one conclusion thou. Our radio files are locked to non-US SIM cards. If you look at the Droid 4 (one of VZW's other LTE world phones) they have the same thing with their radio files.

I only partially understood the process. Question is: will the same method work on spectrum? I DO NOT want to use any US carrier, I am going to visit India, that's where I want to keep using my spectrum; I won't be using 4G as well (Don't think they have it there yet).
 
At this point I do not suggest using their work around if you are not comfortable with editing android. I don't have a non-us SIM card to test, so I can not confirm if their method will work on our phone or not. They are also running Motorola chips, not Qualcomm, so many lines would need to be changed and possibly the drivers in the GSM patch they are using.

If you're talking about sim card swapping like you can do on att and gsm carriers, I don't recommend it. The phone and rom weren't designed for it and I'm willing to bet it'll go wonky on ya.
 
They're not doing sim swapping, their doing actual system edit, including adding in the needed apn list. I'll be honest, this is more of a project for when CM9 gets off the ground, but based on their work, it doesn't seem that it would be hard to modify. But it would be time consuming and require someone overseas for testing.
 
Would be nice if other carries supported UMA (wifi calling) like T-Mobile USA does. I could take my work blackberry to anywhere in the world with a wifi signal and use my USA phone number to call the States at no charge other than minutes.
 
Hi, I am using LG Spectrum in India on NON-SIM Mode.

After Updating my spectrum to ICS i though it will take GSM and CDMA sim also

but if i put GSM Sim card in it it will not detect the sim,

i also tried *#*#4636#*#* and select GSM

And if i Put CDMA sim in it. Only 3G data is working.

No Calling and SMS on CDMA sim card , Just 3G.

i tried sim cards of TATA Indicom, Reliance CDMA, MTS..... (INDIAN CDMA Operators)
 
I have found this thread to be interesting because I appear to have some issues with my SIM. When I am in my home area my phone works. I can make calls and send text however I cannot connect to 3G/LTE. As soon as I leave the immediate area (probably no more then 8 or 9 miles) my phone starts to reboot constantly and each time it comes up and starts to search for signal it will reboot again. The only way to make it stop is to shut down, remove SIM card, turn on, put in airplane mode, shut down, replace SIM card, then turn on. However the moment I turn off airplane mode and it searches for signal it freeze and reboot. I tried the ** menu as well as accessing it through LTEonoff and nothing appears to help. So here is the summary:

When I am within about a 7 mile radius of my home:
Can connect to network
Can connect to WiFi
Can send and receive calls
Can send and receive text
Cannot connect to any data
Phone is stable with no reboots


When I am outside of about a 7 mile radius of my house:
Cannot connect to network
Can connect to WiFi
Cannot send and receive calls
Cannot send and receive text
Cannot connect to any data
Phone freezes immediately when searching for signal at start and consistently reboots.

This behavior occurs regardless of what ROM or version I have installed and I have tried every ROM that has been posted here including reverting back original and removing CMW and installing stock recovery. Is it time to get it back to stock form and take it to Verizon? (The local store is dreadful so I am trying to avoid this at all costs) Thanks!
