Help ICS update killed my samsung note mother board!

Hi,

It is my first time to use a Samsung phone and I bought my Samsung Galaxy Note online and had it for less than 2 months. 2 days ago, a friend came by and asked me why I haven't updated the OS of my phone to ICS when it is already available in my country - and so we decided to update it via wifi (my laptop is not with me when we did it).

After downloading the ICS pack and installed it, my phone just died and I've tried everything to reboot it, took the battery out for an hour and put it back on but still didn't work. So I decided to bring it to the local Samsung service center to have it checked.

As per their diagnosis, the software that come with the unit pre installed from its originating country still does not support the ICS version of it and said that the moment I installed the ICS on the phone totally killed it and the only way to salvage the unit is to replace the mother board which would cost me freakin amount of cash!

Seriously?? Can't they just reformat it the way how computer works?! I am not really into these kind of technical stuffs and knowing this really pisses me off.. Any comments? Anyone?

Thanks!

Welcome to Android Forums, Xyler!
We are glad to have you join us here.

I moved your thread to the Samsung Galaxy Note forum, so that others here can possibly help you with their experiences with the Note, and ICS.:)

Well, there is a hardware bug in the firmware of the eMMC chips used in some Notes which can cause a hard brick problem in some cases (not that frequently though). However, if you attempted to update with an official Samsung ROM, then the phones guarantee should be valid and you can get it replaced free of charge. At least this is true for the international version. Is this what you have or do you have an AT&T Note which has not received updates yet? If you have the AT&T version then you could have a problem.

Eric Ritchie.

Hi Eric,

Thank you for your input. I've called the vendor to check where the unit came from and they said that it was from China. From my research, ICS is already available in China but not for some - like Verizon. So I am still missing the piece of the puzzle why on earth does it happen to me? Random bug attack perhaps?!

Oh well, I shipped my unit to singapore just today to have it checked (another friend is flying over and so I asked him to brought it there to get a second opinion). Hopefully, they could fix it at a lesser cost. Crossing my fingers.

So now, I am stuck with my old flinstone era cellphone and was thinking.. this is actually more sturdier than my samsung galaxy note :P

A notepad is also quite quite sturdy, but I'll keep my Note thanks ;) Seriously though, I hope the other service centre are more service oriented and fix the phone free of charge.

Eric Ritchie.

Haha yeah! I'm not really expecting to hear back from my friend on the status of it anytime soon. I have no clue how long it would normally take for a motherboard to get replaced as this is the first time it happened to me. Free of charge would be fantabolous but no high hopes hahaha

I had the similar problem with my note. had the mo/bo replaced at the center and had them preinstall 4.0.3 when returning it. no problems since then.

question is were you rooted when this happened?

Hi Eluviet,

I am not 100% sure how to answer that question but as far as I can remember, what I did was to update the OS over the air via wifi and then proceeded as per the usual read-instruction-and-install.

Then when I was nearly at the end of the installation, it suddenly freezes for a minute or so and then it finally gave up its last breath and did not open since then..

Heard from my friend who is fixing it in Singapore early today, he said that the mo/bo had to be replaced as the last resort and the center will give a month of warranty (so I need to break the phone again before the warranty ends just so I can utilize it LOL)

Regards,
Xyler

Actually the one month warranty on work done on a device is not unusual. However, if it is a Samsung approved service centre then your general warranty should still apply.

Eric Ritchie.

@Eluviet: I know right?! Weird as it may seem, a month of warranty is still a month of guarantee :P

@Eric: Yes, it is the main samsung center in Singapore. Just found out that the warranty they are to give for a month is not international. I may have to tell my friend to do the job for me in breaking the phone again - perhaps I could get a replacement for a brand new unit?? Lol Apple does it I hope they would too

Well I would seriously hope that a new motherboard will have eMMC with fixed firmware (which the Nexus got BTW) and will not break again.
