Okay , I have heard if I had the froyo ROM flashed onto my phone I cannot receive the official OTA update. This is because they search for the files on your phone and I wanted to know if I flashed a custom 2.1 ROM onto my phone would I get the update seeing that its not 2.2 ? Or would I just need the original ROM . I forgot to back up my phone with odin . FML . Thanks in advance .

It's a diff phone, but my rooted moment with a custom ROM on it had to be flashed back to stock to receive the 2.1 OTA. Mostly cuz it was rooted I thought, But who knows?

Generally, what you heard was correct. At the very least, you can loose root. At worst, you can screw up your phone....somewhere in between is likely where you would end up...in some partially rooted state.

Now with the philosophy of it all. Why would you want to accept the OTA??? Once the developers get their hands on a true official version of 2.2 they will push out a ROM based on the new update. There are many times they get their hands on the official code and push the update out before Sprint does. Anyway, if you unroot and then accept the OTA you will be stock and unrooted and potentially be that way for a LONG time. Why? Because they will have not found an exploit to root the new update and it takes time for them to do that. And even when they do find an exploit, it takes even more time to build a one click rooting method. The developer's priority is not with the people who chose to unroot an accept an OTA. Their priority is pushing out ROMs to people who chose to remain rooted. The newest version of the EVO is not rootable with a one click method and has been so for almost 2 months. Are you prepared to be without root for potentially monthS??? If that doesn't bother you then it is no big deal. But it is something to think about.

PS...EVO guy here so weigh my opinion accordingly.

I maybe wrong with this but when i had my moment and it was rooted when the dj07 update came out i was prompted to update my phone. I was assuming it was that i had an older build than what the ota was. so in my way of thinking why wouldnt it do the same with the leaked 2.2 on the epic? Maybe my noobness coming out but makes sense to me.

Good point, Fly. I had already decided to stay rooted and wait for a custom ROM, but this should be a clincher for anyone who is still on the fence.

Thanks for the enlightenment! What I am wondering is, once the OTA update hits, will there be a custom version of 2.2 that we can flash that is as stable and bug-free as the official official release will hopefully be? I have yet to flash a 2.2 on my Epic because I've read of so many people having problems with the leaked versions so far.
