Help Identifying system crashes

Hello.

Straight to the point... I've been encountering this recurring problem with my Android phone (Xperia Z1) for about a year now. At random times, my phone would simply lock-up with no warning and restart itself, akin to BSOD on PC. Most of the time, it happens while I'm playing some games. But it may also happen on various other apps such as file browsers, social apps, etc. There's no telling when it could happen, it happens completely at random. Since my phone's built-in diagnostic tool can only count the number of crashes without any detailed information about them, I'd like to know if there's any way to identify the cause of those crashes, either through apps that work like WhoCrashed or BlueScreenView on PC, or through some other means.

Any help is appreciated.

Does the phone become significantly hot just before the crash?

Not always. I know my phone has thermal issues - the thing gets hot fast from gaming or even using Maps. I even had to use a laptop cooling fan to alleviate some heat off my phone while gaming. But, like I said, the crashes occur at random regardless of my phone's temperature.

If you have done a factory reset, have all apps updated but the problem still persists, maybe it's hardware related. Overheating is just one of them.

A weakened battery with sudden voltage drop could lead to a restart too, my aging Nexus 7 does it from time to time.
