Do I need this IDrive program that has just appeared on my phone and tablet?
Its now in all my menus
What's it for?

Assuming you are not root-ed ... you can request to uninstall any app. Some of them will not be permitted and some of them will.

It seems to be a think free I drive. Don't know where its come from.

This is why we need a real linux phone. This is BS. Its not like stupid manufacturers are going to come fix my phone when it breaks or i have problems. So why should they get to decide what i will run.

I am beginning to really dislike android because of crap like this.

You can "request" to remove an app? WTF. Throw the phone away would be the correct answer.

It is one of the main reasons many people choose to root their phone and toss away the warranty.

I prefer to ignore it and simply hide them (using Nova Launcher Prime) and remain un-root-ed and under warranty.

In this case if ye tried uninstalliung it and it uninstalled then it was an app that he added and just didn't remember. If he could not uninstall it then it was pre-installed by the manufacturer.

To be fair it's not always "stupid manufacturers" doing it. More often or not it's the carriers adding this stuff to the phones. But that's the price you might pay for having a subsidised phone, so it's the likes of Verizon and AT&T that gets to decide what you will run on your phone. This third-party iDrive thing sounds to me like something the carrier has added, probably because they're an affiliate.

You can get "pure" Android phones if you want, like the Google Nexus phones or the Oppo Find 5. Where you get to decide what you're going to run.

BTW don't think a "real linux phone" would be any better. Canonical already has affiliate agreements with Amazon and Ebay. And if Verizon or Sprint get hold of it, you'll likely be running NFL or NASCAR, whether you want to or not. Ubuntu can be as locked down as Android can.
