If I root a T-Mobile G1 will it become Unlocked?

Well I just recently inquired a T-Mobile G1 but it is still locked on the T-Mobile Network.
I want to unlock it but I figured I would ask if I rooted the phone would it be unlocked?
Or will i still have to pay somebody to get me an unlock code?
Also does anybody know how to unlock a G1 phone easy and cheap?

If you root the phone it will still be locked to T-Mobile. I got an unlock code off ebay for 10 bucks. Just send the IMEI to the seller and he emails a code back. Ill see if I can find the auction for you.

Turns out that seller is no longer on ebay. But that would still be a good place to start.
