hey fellaz

I have a LG l38c running 2.3.6. I can not make my phone a hotspot. if I root my phone then can I? I dont know if its lock out by my carrier or a hardware issue.

thanks

I've had success using the FoxFi app. It allows you to turn your phone into a hotspot without needing to Root your phone.

Some carriers monitor your data usage and may charge you extra or halt your service if you abuse it. Or, they may require you to add an extra monthly fee to allow for "hotspot" service. FoxFi has a proxy as an addon that should help avoid such issues.

As long as you don't go nuts with it, you should be OK.

I don't know about other servers but I have Verizon & when I use the FoxFi app. they cut me off in 5 minutes or less. I can keep re-hooking up but that's a pain in the rear... That's why I want to switch to AT&T (one reason) & after I do I'm hoping they won't shut off FoxFi on me.... Bill

ps, I'm not rooted...

I tried using foxfi few days ago and it wasn't able to turn on wifi hotspot. I tried few different apps and non of them were able to turn on hotspot. even in my system settings there's no option for mobile hotspot.
that's why I'm wondering if rooting will allow me to or if my phone hardware not capable.

Are you using the free version? I believe that is part of the limitations of the free one, it cuts you off after so long (gotta have some reason to get people to pay for it).

There's also a proxy server addon that's designed to hide tether usage from your carrier. I don't know how well it works, as my carrier gives me unlimited data and has never bothered me about my use (and, to be fair, I have yet to hit 1gb a month on this thing).

I have Verizon and a Motorola RAZR M and they gave me a Verizon tethering app with it. So I doubt that it was a Verizon issue.

@ OP If you can't tether with the wifi you could try using bluetooth to tether the internet with.

it is against most carrier's ToS to use tethering without a tethering plan, but i'm on Net10 and while they explictely say 'NEVER use tethering on Android' on their Smartphone packages, the worst they ever did to me was slow my speed to dial-up (or 56Kbps) if i went over a 'daily limit' which apparently is set at 2GB/day or 1GB/month total use. however no actual app worked except for one--wifi tether for root users--not sure why but none of the others worked unless you wanted USB only. some froze at the 'setting up tether' stage or just booted me back to my home screen, or told me it was not possible. i would advise never to get into a habit of using this method or replacing your current internet service, and it will not work with online gaming (latency issues) and if using Netflix it will work for one day and then you get dial-up speeds, but for a backup to your main internet when it goes down, or using it when out and not near a wifi hotspot somewhere, for browsing the web or checking email or weather, it is fine.

Ah yes, it was the free one! Didn't try the one you pay for. I don't want to pay now as I'm switching phones & servers... Hoping to be able to teether through AT&T w/ a HTC One X. Yes, I don't think your suppose to 'teether' for free through Verizon. I have unlimited internet if I use my phone, but teethering is extra... Thanks! Bill

Recently download the Foxfi app and they no longer have the enable proxy server option. Know anything about this?
