You can't. You have to pay every month regardless if you use the service and if you wanna keep your number.

That's one of the disadvantages of being sans contract...
Or, if you have Google voice, just switch the number to Google voice, and then switch it back to metro when you return...
Google voice only has a startup fee, so it's a quite more economical way to save your number than paying a full cellphone bill every month.

the one things i wish metro did like boost mobile lol with boost you can go for 90 days without paying for it and metro is only for 30 days

what you can do is lets say your bill is due on the 3rd of November. just don't pay it till the 2nd of December so you don't have to waste 2 months of service your paying for, just one. your phone can be off for up to 30 days before you loose your number. i think this is your best option.
