Help If I wanted Shine Plus to run a bit faster without rooting... what should I do?

I don't really have time to spend on rooting the phone,
(BTW, does the rooting enables overclocking the CPU? I don't know)
But I would like to find out if there's a way to run the phone a bit faster.
I play some games or run some apps,
Sometimes I see some laggings,
And I thought I should delete some apps
And widgets on the main screen to reduce the memory usage.
I am not really sure that really worked,
But would like to ask you guys to get the correct information,
Not my gut-feelings-that-it-feels-working-faster.

Plus, this may be a dumb question, but what will I be able to do when I root?
Won't I be breaking Telus' service agreement or anything like that?

Rooting just permits you to modify your phone's system folders, which the phone does not do out of the box. For example, alot of apps like root explorer, Titanium backup, Android Wifi tether, etc. need root to access some of the lower system functions. It won't permit to overclock sadly, as this needs a custom kernel (Lower level programming) which noone has attempted yet with this phone.

The only real way to speed things up is to install the custom ROM that was created by dsi and getitnowmarketing and maybe install another launcher (Like GO Launcher, Launcher Pro or ADW launcher) which is ALOT faster than the stock LG or stock Eclair launcher. There might be some random android tweaks here and there in forums, but most apps and tweaks would require a root of the phone.

Rooting can be a pretty safe and reversible procedure with some programs out there, and really: most of the trouble usually occurs with the things that one does when they have acquired root permissions. Sticking with the popular 'root permission required' apps that karendar mentioned is a safe way to squeeze some efficiency out of your phone, even if you don't want to mess with custom ROMS (like karendar mentioned).

If you are still hesitant to root your phone (as most people are), then I would recommend getting some kind of task killer app, or system panel app, which allows you to monitor and kill unneeded processes. When you figure out which processes you need (eg. email app, clock app, widgets etc), you kill everything else that you don't use so you can get a heck of a lot more performance out of the phone. The less activity (active or inactive apps) means faster system processing and even slightly longer battery life.

Don't bother rooting the phone. Void warranty, lose update capability, etc.

If you want the phone to run faster download "Astro File Manager" from the market. Open the app and hit the menu button (4 horizontal lines). Click "Tools" then "Process Manager".

Kill applications you aren't using. I usually go from about 215 mb of ram to 300 mb or more available. No lag, no freezing, no force closes.

Enjoy!

Rooting was really easy on the shine plus, I used universal androot and it was the simplest thing ever. I kind of had to, cause I needed wifi tethering. USB tethering with pdanet worked, but I had to pay like $20 for the full version to use secure websites like my school website. Installing the custom rom however was a bit more complex for a newbie like me, I managed but ended up accidentally wiping my phone to factory setup, and lost my full version of pdanet so I would have had to pay again for the full version, not sure what happened there.
Anyways since I was rooted at that point i installed barnacle which has been much faster and more reliable, and more convenient being able to leave the phone anywhere in my room and plug into the wall charger when needed.
Now I'm using my girlfriends desire and it is a more complex phone to root. Luckily it has wifi hotspot without rooting, so the only benefit to rooting for me would be to get rid of all the extra crap they installed (much more than the Shine plus came with), but I'm not going to bother cause this phone has an over the counter warranty at Future Shop so if it ever messes up its a straight exchange.
