If you were in my shoes...

I wasn't specifically talking about action memos (I've never used them on my N3), but yes, for complete data transfer most times you need root. I mean, what good does it do on the google play store to re-install apps on your new device but not the app data?? And that is exactly the biggest fail I have always had with Android - horrible backup service. It's also why I root - to be able to move apps and their complete data to a new/different device. That is what I was referring to with my root comment.

Years ago I quickly got into the habit of rooting my phones for many reasons.

Fast forward to today and Android 4.4.4. Now one could easily get by without rooting if not for this "horrible backup" scenario which still exists. Therefore in my case I'll continue to root. :)

I know this is a bit off topic but since I started the thread, lol.....

My new issue is I'm having trouble deciding between the N4 or the Edge. Added to the mix is if I can get my hands on the moto 360 and I start hearing that the battery life of that item is able to get through a day, then the n4 seems like the best choice because the watch on its charger will act like an alarm clock.

If the watch stinks and I don't get it, the curved edge of the Edge acts like a beautiful night clock, so there you go.

But as I mentioned in other threads, i use my N3 every single day to take notes so I'd have to be able to hold the edge comfortably and securely for taking notes.

Let me also say that I'm grateful and blessed that these are the trivial, silly "problems" I'm faced with right now. Life is good and I'd love your opinions on my situation, your thoughts on the 360 if you have it, its use as a night clock, and your thoughts on the Edge versus the N4.

As always, thanks.

Joe, do you use Touchwiz or a 3rd party launcher, like Nova (can't remember...sorry, I've known you long enough on here that I should remember). My main concern in considering the Edge is how the sidebar will function, when using a 3rd party launcher. I feel as if it'll function similar to how the multi-window works with 3rd party launchers (without issue), but there's really no way to tell unless someone does an advanced review using a 3rd party launcher.

That said, if you use Touchwiz and compatibility isn't an issue for you, then here are some pros/cons that would be my considerations. I just hope that they somewhat can apply for your decision:

Edge = up to 64gb? vs. Note 4 = up to 32gb internal? (Whether the US providers offer a 64gb Edge is still up in the air)

Edge = new form factor w/ more functions to learn vs. Note 4 = almost identical experience to Note 3 w/ added features

Edge = Great for quick reference, since just the bar can be opened without turning the full screen on vs. Note 4 = same way as the Note 3

Edge = Slightly smaller battery vs. Note 4 = Slightly bigger battery than Note 3

Other things that have come to mind are
1) Does the Edge have a removable/replaceable battery also?
2) Which is more comfortable to hold, by comparison?
3) Wireless charging connectors available in both phones?

For me, it really comes down to if either of them are offered in 64gb w/ microSD slot. If neither is offered, then I'll just continue enjoying the Note 3 for another year and swoop up Samsung's 1st gen of their folding YOUM phone.

Just another example of how great this community is...
Thanks for the response and input. All things for me to keep in mind, but probably won't be able to answer until I can actually get my grubby little hands on an Edge to feel it myself.
With the wifey waiting patiently since her screen is busted, I also need to keep in mind when each device will come out. If the Edge is really far behind, I'd hate to make her wait longer.
Being a dad, hubby and unnecessary gadget lover, I should probably keep price in mind too. I'm hoping that the prices aren't too crazy (using the Edge Program from Verizon) as I'm also looking into the Moto 360 or LG watch when it releases.
As far as Nova or TW...back on my Nexus days (when I joined this site) I was all about Nova. Even used it on my N2, but then didn't mind TW after a while and use it exclusively on my N3. With the newest version coming to the N4, I'm willing to give it a go.

If you have been using TW on Note 3, then that leaves the edge open as definite possibility.

Another thing you can do is check with the Samsung Experience folks to see of any of them have seen or held both of the new notes in person. If so, then you can ask them how it felt to hold both in comparison to the Note 3. Since you were planning to ask them about action memo transfer anyway, wouldn't hurt to have additional questions. Typically, when I have questions about upcoming Samsung devices, I scout to see who the manager is at Samsung Experience, as they're the likely ones to have had seen pre-release devices.

I did that prior to the Note 3 release and they actually had relavent info regarding the physical feeling of the phone that made my decision to upgrade easier. If they had said the Note 3 was slightly more difficult to hold than the Note 2, I might have skipped or delayed my decision to upgrade. Once they said it really felt more comfortable, I was sold. And, even though I typically wouldn't go with their word, it ended up being true for me too.

Hi all, I respect this community enough to ask for your input.

By now we know there is a debate of whether the N4 is that much better than the N3 and to be honest with you, I love my N3 and would just keep it, but...

Each time I upgrade, which is usually every year, my wife is the beneficiary of my old model. So, the plan was that she would get my N3 when I get the 4. Recently, her N2 (my old phone) hit the pavement and the screen cracked, making it so she needs a new phone more than ever. Again, the plan was she would just get my N3. I'm not blown away by the 4, but would you still get it in my situation or would you push your wife into a different model (maybe the s5) if you liked your N3 as I do. Or, do you think it is just worth taking the plunge, getting the 4 and giving her the 3?

I know this seems trivial, but my gadgets are my thing so I would like opinions. Thanks so much!

Joe

I would go with your original plan. The smartphone market has hit its ceiling. Every year is going to feel like an incremental upgrade. That is what the Note 4 is in comparison to the Note 3. It is a very nice phone though. I love the fingerprint scanner and the metal frame. If it is not the Note 4 what other phone are you considering? The S5? The Iphone 6 plus? I would buy the Note 4.

Very good points.
I'm now excited for the prospect of either the n4 or the Edge. I THINK I'm leaning towards the N4 but only because I haven't held the Edge yet. Plus, I want the phone sooner than later.

Same thing for me - lack of app data backup without root is something android should have remedied years ago. There are still other things I like root for, but I could do without most of them except for true app + data backup.

Very well said, we're on the same wavelength here. :)

I think folks will be surprised at both the high price and the need to probably always use Wiz for the bendy display.

Living on the Edge!

Ahhhh, 90s Aerosmith. I recall driving around in hough school listening to that on a cassette lol.

Seems we are about the same age, because I have those same memories from the same era. :)

While I don't feel it, I'm 38. My love of electronics began in 81/82 with an Atari 2600. Before cell phones I had to carry a beeper just because I wanted the technology not because I had anyone who needed to contact me, lol. Oh youth.

Gen X represent! I'm a couple years behind you, Joe. It was Colecovision for me, in addition to IBM cpu. And I remember after Pagenet, there were more smaller companies offering small pagers and the goal was to find the smallest pager with the lowest monthly payment plan!

Last pager I had, prior to getting a cellphone, was almost the size of a USB flash drive I currently own.

Love that I'm not alone, lol.

And how could I not put a shout out in for Oregon Trail and Where In The World Is Carmen San Diego!

Oh the early days of learning the difference between ROM and RAM. Although, I must say that the explanations I was given as a kid were not exactly the most accurate...LOL.
