Illegal?

i tried to root my rogers HTC dream. but aparently i followed the wrong tutorial, and some how got the t-mobile G1 FW on it. and now i cant get past the google sign in. its stuck with tmobile. im ****ed here.

so is rooting illegal....if i call rogers, and tell them i found an update, did it, but now i have the tmobile G1 FW on it, would i get in trouble, unless someone can help me im lost and incredibly pissed

if i call rogers and tell them that, could i just get a new phone?

First, try to flash it to some other firmware. As I understand, the hardware is pretty much fool-proof and can be easily reflashed unless you've ended up with a total "brick".

Second, it's not illegal. It's just beyond the warranty coverage ) So after discovering what you've done to the phone, you will be refused to get a new phone.

Cant you edit the APN settings on there and add rogers settings? Also im with informale, try flashing a different FW onto the phone.

Why would it be illegal? Its your phone you can do anything you want with it.

Sort of. Just like if you buy a car, and do something stupid, the police can impound it.

If you fork it because you were circumventing the carriers build, you're on your own. Sucks, but that's how it is.

If one is stupid enough to fiddle with his phone and unlucky enough to make s total mess of it, why should the manufacturer or the carrier be responsible.

Yes but a car is different from a phone. Your phone isn't a 2000lb projectile going to kill people if you mess it up, and there are laws about what you can and can't do to your car, a phone is just a small piece of hardware, as long as you aren't stealing anything with it, there isnt anything they can do, besides tell you they wont cover it or say they wont send you a new one.

I still have to laugh at how n8man1068 thinks its illegal to root your phone. lolz. Ill let you in on another secret. Its also illegal to drop your phone in public. You will get a ticket if a police officer sees you drop your phone on the ground. Be careful my friend. Hold onto your phone tight when there is a cop around you dont want to get a $50 ticket if your phone slips out of your hand. lolz.

Illegal? No. Unsupported by your carrier? Yes.

You own the phone, you can screw with it however you want. I don't believe there's anything illegal about it. Your carrier/manufacturer aren't going to support you though, and they may deny you service/replacements if you messed with the phone in ways that were not intended.

Show me where I said it was illegal.

Maybe I should have quoted less. I said it's your phone, within 'If you fork it because you were circumventing the carriers build, you're on your own. Sucks, but that's how it is. '
