Root I'm a noob - so please explain!!!

steeped

Newbie
My HTC Amaze has the stupid light leaking onto my screen from the soft keys. The only way I can remove the lights from the soft keys is to root my phone. I have never rooted an Android before.

What are ROMS? From my research, it seems like it's a custom build of an actual Android OS? Does this mean that there could be viruses or files that don't work properly?

What is the most reliable HTC ROM?

Is there a one-click method to rooting my phone?

Sorry for the idiotic questions....

Ok to answer your questions...

1) A rom is sometimes a tweaked/themed version of a stable released Android OS. (For us it would be themed/tweaked htc firmware 4.0.3)
Or it could be a port from another device that could be full of bugs.

2) I have a thread with a lot of roms and where they could be found in the all root section of this forum.

3) If you want the stock feeling, but a bunch of tweaks that better performance and battery life, then i would go with EnergyRom Stock 8.1

4)Hasoons tool is the easiest way to root this phone.
(I even have a video explaining how to use this ;) )

Good Luck and have fun with your rooted phone.

You're amazing.

OK I went through many tutorials, and have a few questions...

1) What does Kernels do?
2) Is I do permroot, will I be able to unroot my phone if I ever need to take it into warranty?
3) If I do temp root, will I be able to make the required changes to my phone (disable softkey lights) without it resetting back to normal after I reboot?
4) what does flashing do? I understand you need to unlock your bootloader to do it, but what am I flashing?
4) When watching hasoons video, he never showed how or when do load a new ROM?

1) Kernal's give you the opportunity to make your phone go a little faster and give better battery life, etc..
2-3) I dont think you need to perm-root anymore... and they both give you root features...
4) Flashing just means installing something through recovery.
5) I made the video lol.. I never showed to load a new rom because i didnt have another camera with me. Sorry.
But to load a rom you just need to install it through recovery.

The downloads on that forum have been removed: Goo.im Downloads - Browsing Amaze_Stock

But I found an alternative mirror on Google, flashed it and now I am good to go!

I do have a final question. Am I officially rooter after unlock the bootloader, or after I flash a recovery/flash a custom rom?

Once you have flashed your recovery you should be rooted. After loading your rom, open the superuser app and you will know for sure.
