Help I'm about to lose my mind. Help me please, my phone won't go past the start-up screen

So I upgraded to Froyo and was having the issue that others are having with the not enough space notification. I read through the threads and tried to bypass the hard reset by defragging method and my phone finished up, restarted and now will not go past the HTC, droid start up graphics. They just keep looping and I can't turn the phone off, or reach any other screen, all I can do is take out the battery to get it to stop.

Help?

PS. I'm alright with the tech stuff but I'm not an expert so please use words and instructions for a 3rd grader.

Are you rooted? If not can you get to Hboot or stock recovery by holding volume down while powering?

I'm not rooted. And I've tried that but nothing happens.

I know some people are against root, but if nothing else it would allow you to save yourself from something like this

I was going to root right after I turned my phone back on.
