Hey there fellow AFers! I took a rather long, unexpected break from the forums due to illness. The very brief version is that I nearly died from a combination of sepsis, cardiac failure, rhabdomyolysis, renal failure, respiratory failure, and a large liver abscess. I spent six months in hospitals and rehab centers, then had home nursing care for several more months. The experience was humbling, to say the least. I found that you lose your dignity, your privacy, your pride, your freedom, and more, when you're that sick and other people have to do everything for you.
I still have a ways to go in terms of recovery, and I'm living with post-sepsis syndrome, but for the most part each day is a little better than the day before. Each time we've been able to eliminate something, like the bedside commode or the wheelchair or walker, it feels like a huge victory. I get confused easily...but that could be old age firmly taking hold! No, seriously, it's part of PSS, but it's getting better all the time, too. Just a few days ago I was able to replace the keyboard on my main laptop and that felt amazing.
Hope you're all doing well. I've missed this place a lot.
