I'm new. Help :)

Basically, I'm new. Just created an account. Long story short, I want to root my Galaxy S2. Can't be bothered anymore of waiting for delayed updates. I want to root my phone and install an ICS ROM on it. I just have a few questions.

So, how do I do it? I understand how it needs to be done but I want to make sure I don't brick my phone in the process. I've been looking around for Kernels and can't find the one my phone requires: XWKH1

Also, as long as I follow the instructions very carefully, it will work? Because my main concern with rooting is that my phone will be bricked.

Any advice will be helpful. Thanks :)

OK so I downloaded the CF Kernel (XWKH1). One question, is it supposed to be a zip file? When I click 'PDA' in Odin I just select this entire rar file? I thought there was supposed to be an insecure and original kernel file?

When you download it, it is a zip file. You need to unzip it. When its done, it should show up in a ".tar" format. The ".tar" is what you flash in Odin via the PDA. Most people around here recommend that you use the 7Zip program for extracting files.

Just make sure you follow the "A Dummies Guide" to the letter and you'll be ok......if you deviate, it's on you!!

Thanks man. Would you mind linking me to the 'Dummies guide'?

Ok thanks. There was another guide which I saw included a S2Root.exe software and this isn't included in the dummies guide?

Do you know about this software and is it necessary? Hopefully you understand what I'm saying :)

Dummies Guide is all I have used and as far as I am concerned, it's perfect. If its not in there, then I would think you don't need it. Just used ironass's Dummies Guide and you should be in business.

Just make sure your phone is a I9100 and the CF Kernel you select is the one you need. That is also explained in the guide. Like I said if you read the guide and understand it, follow it to the letter and you will be ok.

Thank you very much. I think I am gonna do it. One last question. I am currently on Gingerbread 2.3.4

After I root, can I install ROMs which put me on 4.0.0 ICS?

Yes, after rooting you can install any rom that is compatible with your phone.

My suggestion is, worry about rooting it first. Once you root your device come back here and let us know. Then we can walk you through installing a different rom.

The reason I say this is, I'd hate for you to get the instructions mixed up and mess up your phone. However, if you are dead set on knowing now, I or someone else here, can explain it to you.

Hey, I would jsut like to thank you and the other guy who helped me on this thread and a huge thank you to the 'Dummies Guide'. I am now rooted. Worked perfectly. I was very nervous but now it is done.

Erm...lol...what do I do next is the question. I have Superuser and CWM? Apprently backing up my current stock ROM is the first thing?

Fist thing.....go into CWM find the backup option, DO IT!!! It's you get outa jail free card if things ever go bad. Make them everytime before you change roms or do any big changes .

Next get Titanium backup if you don't have it already. It is used to back up you apps and their respective data. The Pro version of this lets you "freeze" whatever programs you want to. Be careful and know what you are freezing.

In that Dummies Guide you used.......there is a good section What App's should I install, very useful for a new rooted user.

That should give you a good start! ;)

Thank you very much for the tips. I am backing up stock rom now with CWM. Yes, Titanium Backup (Free) was the first thing I installed. Will back up apps after ROM backup. Thanks. I'll let you know when I'm done :)

all your apps you want to keep when you swap to another rom

trust me flashahoilics anonymous is coming your way :)

siyah kernel now supports dual booting and its a bitch in high heels

OK, I have downloaded the ROM (thanks)
Could you help me with installing this ROM? And also, it doesn't slow down 3G network does it? Or cause any other problems? Because of what some people wrote in the comments. And I can recover my SMS messages with TB after?

Thanks buddy :)
