I'm on the fence [which device to get]

With a lot of uncertainty in regards to this phone landing on my carrier (BELL Canada) as its only been confirmed by Telus andRogers I have a question about the HTC One.

I recently sold my Galaxy Nexus and I'm waiting to buy a phone off contract.

I've narrowed it down to 3 devices, the S4, the one and the Sony ZL.

After a lot of research I've been leaning towards the ONE.

Does this phone use Google now? This was a feature I loved on my GNEX.
From the pictures I've seen, maybe I'm wrong but I don't see the typical "back" "home" and "last apps used" soft buttons I'm used to with ICS and jelly bean.

Maybe someone can answer on those two points and seal the deal, assuming bell actually gets thier shit together and announces this phone!

since you are asking about other devices, I have moved your question to a more appropriate forum so more eyes can respond with their opinions.

here is one of the best reviews on the ONE:

AnandTech | The HTC One Review

for the other devices you are seeking, there are some threads on those here.

What exactly makes you lean towards the One as opposed to the S4? I'm in the process of debating the same issue and would love your input.

I'm still looking at both.

The One has very loud speakers, dual-diaphragm microphones (so videotaping loud events or ones with a lot of noise don't overload the noise canceling and come out muffled), a brighter screen and the F/2.0 very light sensitive 4 MP camera - features lacking on the SGS4 and important to me.

The SGS4 has a removable battery, an sd card slot, and is clocked higher. Nice, but less important to me, as a 64 GB One is coming and the newer HTCs do really well on battery life. Samsung is claiming to step up their camera game, so we'll see, the SGS3 camera was good. Samsung now allows saturation adjustment on the new screen, so it should be much closer to getting HTC's color quality as well.

For me, they're very close, but I think that the One is better suited to my needs.

It may be a tough call.

I may decide by holding each one when available and going by feel and personal impressions. I'm a big believer in trusting what my hands, ears and eyes tell me about a phone.

From everything I've read, especially from users of the One in the UK, the One is probably it for me though.

You are right about on the same page as I am. The removable battery and SD card are pretty tempting to me, but HTC has a superior product IMO. The camera has been the biggest deciding factor for me. I have a new child that I want to have as you put it, the best picture taken by the camera I have on me, which is always going to be my phone.
The reviews for the camera are damning here and exalting there, so I feel the same about what I hold in my hand being the true judgment. We'll have to see what Verizon actually comes out with and how it compares. Until then, I will be watching.
HTC has my loyalty for now, but this is the final showdown.
I'm rooting for the One.

So I can go buy the one this friday for

310 + 149 on an early upgrade

Or i can wait till april 27th and buy the s4 for

310 + 200

How do you think the updates will be for these 2? Thats my last concern as Ive decieded either phone would suit me well.

They should be the same. Both will probably get at least two years worth of upgrades. When they will receive them is dependant on your carrier.

I don't know about other carriers, but Verizon has historically been extremely behind in supplying upgrades to HTC phones. I also don't know about other manufacturers of phones on the VZ network, but I get the impression that HTC has suffered more than others. I have heard speculation that intigration with Sense was a pain for upgrades, but it was just that, speculation.
Maybe someone else with a little more knowledge on this can weigh in.
But in regards to two years of upgrades, I wouldn't count on that. My DInc2 is about two years old and still runs 2.3.4 officially.
That wouldn't stop me though. I'll be rooted and getting the latest available either way.

Well they may take a little longer, but they are supporting them for a while. I think the incredible recently got an update, and it is three years old.
