Im unlocking my GSM hero, what carrier, and can I make it faster?

i am unlocking my GSM hero, if I root etc, can I make my phone faster? also I want to use app2sd, and maybe a newer version of android if it would help...

What US carriers have a pay as you go sim for data etc?
