IMAP mail sync never completes

rbd

Newbie
Hi all,

I am trying to configure my new T-Mobile Galaxy S3 (Android 4.1.2, kernel 3.0.31-956337) to download mail from an IMAP server at the university where I work. I am using the e-mail app that came with the phone. Any attempt to sync my e-mail causes a download that never completes. When I check the data usage entry in the Settings I see a slowly increasing amount of data being transferred on behalf of the e-mail app which is far larger than the size of the actual inbox file on my IMAP server (45Mb of transferred data for a 16Mb inbox file!). The only way to terminate the transfer is to disable e-mail sync.

When I configured my incoming and outgoing server settings, the automated settings check succeeded with no error. Also, (i) I have verified these settings with my office network admin, and (ii) my wife's e-mail seems to work OK on her identical Galaxy S3 from the same office server using the settings I am using. My outgoing mail appears to work OK.

I went to a T-Mobile store tonight where they told me to exchange my phone. I did (just to humor them), and of course it made no difference. Internet and voice work fine on the phone.

According to my network admin the IMAP server is seeing incoming client stuff from the phone but the connection is continually being broken. Here are some representative messages from the system log file:

Are there any other e-mail apps that handle IMAP transfers in a more robust manner? It appears that data are being transferred but the transfer is being continually interrupted and restarted. (In general, I want to only sync e-mail manually, as I mostly do e-mail on office computers and don't want the phone mucking anything up except when I tell it to.) Is there any place on the phone I can look to see if any e-mail-related files are being written? (I looked around, but found nothing.)

Any ideas gratefully accepted, thanks!
