imap setup behind VPN

Hi All,

I've got an HTC Desire that I have had no luck setting up an IMAP account.

My required imap configuration is that the imap server is identified by IP address, and it is on a non-standard port. This is because my company requires me to connect to our VPN first, then access the mail servers (which is why i need to use the IP address). The config screen does allow me to enter IP and port and it doesn't complain - yet.

But then I can't get past this screen. Can't communicate with the server. So I ended up installing K-9 Email which works perfectly, so I know I have valid network settings, etc.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.
Corey.

You don't mention setting up VPN connectivity first (a must if VPN connectivity is required to access your mail server). Does K9 work without VPN? Sounds to me like VPN may not be required or you may be confused as to what it means. Specifying the port isn't the same as VPN.

I understand completely. Let's take the VPN out of the picture to make this simpler to describe. Android mail setup does not work for me when I need to specify a server by IP address and a non-standard IMAP port - even when I connect to the network over wifi.

As I said, the fact that K-9 works over wifi AND over VPN over 3G tells me that I have correct settings and network infrastructure. What has got me stumped is why I can't set up the same account in android mail.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Corey.
