Root imei unlocking

Hi everyone...I'm just wondering:
I bought a motorola bravo from ebay...it works great but I want to use it with T-mobile. I talked to some at&t customer support and they were able to get me an imei unlock code.
The thing I'm worried about is I've heard that after 5 tries to unlock it will brick the phone. Is there any way to know if a unlock code has already been entered?

I'm really not that experienced with that phone, but you'd better get the proper info and procedures before you start messing with meid, and such. Especially if the term "brick" is involved!
