Importing contacts from exel

pinky

Newbie
I have a long list of contacts in excel and need to import them to my tablet/phone google contacts. I can import name and phone number using csv and google contacts import, but all other data goes in comment section, not even email is added. I created csv file according to google support instructions (name, mobile phone, email address, groups, notes - these are the fields I need), but result is pretty lousy. Any idea how to do this? Any app maybe? I only found paid apps, for something a phone should be able to do on itself, without any external help.

Any help appreciated

A phone's contact app is able to import vcard files (.vcf), which is the standard for contact transfer. If you can translate them to that format you should be OK.

Since you are using Windows, can you import your excel to Outlook? You should be able to export vcf from there.

The problem is that I do not get the fields I need. They are : name, phone number, email, group, notes. I tried a test importing to outlook and it imported empty contact. Tried using support https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/295664, no good. I see that in csv it uses ";" not ",", that might be the issue. It shows all row as 1 value

Yeah, csv by definition should use "," rather than ";". I just tried exporting a random spreadsheet on my laptop to csv and confirm that it did that correctly, i.e. used commas rather than semicolons (I also got the whole thing as a single row). So the question is why your excel is inserting semicolons?

If you can't find a way of making excel do this correctly, you could try installing LibreOffice and seeing whether it will do a better conversion to csv?

It might have to do something with region settings. In formulas excel uses ";" too, while in forums I often see "',", But with comma formulas don't work for me.

Actually there are 2 problems with that:

1) pinky wants to import contacts, not export them
2) export from the phone book saves them as vcard (.vcf), not comma separated variable (.csv).

I have 500 contacts of clients in excel and entering them all one by one to my phone is dreadful. Any new ideas?

I tried changing the region settings. I got csv file in simple columns, opening in note shows that they are still separated with ";" :

Name;Phone;relationship;meeting;call;notes
2 Inga;861111111;taip;17.Rgp;16.Rgp;something
9 Reda ;862222222;ne;30.Rgp;29.Rgp;something, something

I tried to make excel from outlook, it made a normal csv file with values separated by ",":

Title,"First Name","Middle Name","Last Name","Suffix","Company","Department","Job Title","Business Street","Business Street 2","Business Street 3","Business City","Business State","Business Postal Code","Business Country/Region","Home Street","Home Street 2","Home Street 3","Home City","Home State","Home Postal Code","Home Country/Region","Other Street","Other Street 2","Other Street 3","Other City","Other State","Other Postal Code","Other Country/Region","Assistant's Phone","Business Fax","Business Phone","Business Phone 2","Callback","Car Phone","Company Main Phone","Home Fax","Home Phone","Home Phone 2","ISDN","Mobile Phone","Other Fax","Other Phone","Pager","Primary Phone","Radio Phone","TTY/TDD Phone","Telex","Account","Anniversary","Assistant's Name","Billing Information","Birthday","Business Address PO Box","Categories","Children","Directory Server","E-mail Address","E-mail Type","E-mail Display Name","E-mail 2 Address","E-mail 2 Type","E-mail 2 Display Name","E-mail 3 Address","E-mail 3 Type","E-mail 3 Display Name","Gender","Government ID Number","Hobby","Home Address PO Box","Initials","Internet Free Busy","Keywords","Language","Location","Manager's Name","Mileage","Notes","Office Location","Organizational ID Number","Other Address PO Box","Priority","Private","Profession","Referred By","Sensitivity","Spouse","User 1","User 2","User 3","User 4","Web Page"

How do I make the first to look like the second?

Update:

I might have found a work around using google drive :D

Google play store has more apps to sync your contacts/sms etc. I always used Contacts Backup & Restore app to backup all my important contacts and sms.

Android is killing me. I actually managed to transfer my contacts but notes didn't transfer. I had to copy from excel and paste in in google drive spreadsheet, download as csv, import it to outlook, create vcf files and add them to my phone. In vcf file there is notes section but when transferred to phone it isn't added. It shouldn't be so complicated.

The contacts backup and restore seems to work only for backing up contacts and restoring them from phone contacts. I have excel file.

Now I need a way to add loads of notes automatically and I will be set

In description it is written "Maybe some developer has the power to Switch to the new Google.Drive API, but until then, no notes sync."

I am using version 3.9.10 on my workstation running Windows 7.

It syncs through Google.
It controls Outlook to Google is and Google to Outlook.
The phone controls phone to Gogole and Google to hone.

There is no Calendar syncing.

I have it set to sync contacts in both directions.
I was referring to the Note field in contact. This is synced in both directions.

I have never used the Notes facility in Outlook.

I don't know anything about the authors or documentation or future plans for the program, I don't use Outlook Notes. I sync the contacts and their notes field every day. It maintains my notes in the contacts on both platforms.

ok, I managed to sync my contacts with notes. No idea why it says it can't sync notes. Will try to edit maybe it doesn't update them or something.

Update: after updating in google it doesn't sync to outlook. But from outlook to google it syncs. Since that is what I need, don't care about outlook, my problem is solved.

1. save contacts in csv file (for me only google spreadsheet works)
2. Add csv file to outlook, map it
3. sync with Go Contact Sync Mod (only notes from outlook syncs, doesn't sync from google to outlook)

Thanks to everyone for the help

If you hit the three dots in Outlook one of the options is Notes. This is like a notepad. My GUESS is that this is the ting that is not being synced.

It really does work for contacts.

If you are trying to get something from phone to Outlook without waiting you have to remember to sync it phone to Google and then Google to Outlook.
