Booker T and the MGs released the tune, "Green Onions."

I first heard it probably a decade later, and immediately liked it. I remember recording songs from the radio onto a cassette player (who remembers those? How about 8-track...reel to reel?) so I could listen to them later and I'd often get frustrated with those DJs who talked well past the beginning of the song...

But I digress. This post is about "Green Onions." ;)

Which you can listen to here:

Very catchy tune, right?

So why is it that when I hear it ever since 1995, I immediately think of the movie "Get Shorty?" Not that it's a bad movie, not at all, it's one of my favorites. But why would it being used in that movie (it's been used in several, FWIW) erase all of the other associations I had with the song?

It's just weird the way the brain works, sometimes. :D :D

Yes indeed. BTW, I like "Get Shorty" a lot, too, but I haven't seen it for quite a while now.

I recorded songs from the radio both with cassette and reel-to-reel. The reel-to-reel was an old Revox I acquired second hand, but the quality was better than the shoebox cassette recorder I had. I often borrowed records from the neighbours and recorded them as well. Oh the copyright infringement.. LOL

I'm sure 8track was more of a play only medium, think it was only Radio Shack/Tandy that sold blank cartridges and decks that could record. I believe it was originally invented by Bill Lear to provide stereo music in Ford and GM cars, and in his Learjets. I remember the format being quite popular in the UK in the 1970s, then died out rapidly in the very early 80s. As stereo cassettes became very popular then. Our family never had an 8track. We had a lot of cassettes and records though.

I remember having albums,45's,8 Tracks, and Cassettes.
I wore out an AC/DC Back In Black 8 track tape.
Also had a crap load of 45's.
Plus I was born in 62.

I spent many hours up in Savannah they used to play the "6 pack" which was 6 new albums every week. yeah some were repeats but I would record the ones I didn't have and wanted. It was great because in between the albums they played the commercials allowing you time to get the new cassette ready and then they played the entire album through with no interruptions. Those were the good ole days. I did have some 8 tracks but they died out to quickly the only good thing about the 8 track players was there was no rewind so the whole album had to be good. :D
