Help In bad need of expert advice on zte merit z990g

Oh my where to begin..... well the device seems to be faulty from get go in all honesty. Every since I got it it had had these repetive reboots, where its constantly rebooting its self.
(Ive owned it for right at 4 1/2 almost 5 months now)
Up until a week or so, it would delete everything when it re booted, including wipe out my APN and other settings. (More like it was factory resetting itself)
Numerous conflits later between Net10 and myself over all of it, things still arent resolved....it doesnt delete anything any longer, but the reboots continue.


Well, yresterday, it started rebooting over and over again, so I blew it off and sat the phone on my in table. Round 10-15 minutes, the damn things screen went to flashing repeatedly almost as if it were struggeling or something. Not real sure how to explain it honestly...but it flashed real fast a few more times before it lit the screen up all pretty blue before shutting down. I have it half bass working again tho now it not only reboots, but my touch screen doesnt respond w
ell anymore and my device seems really slow.
Data os still good & so is battrry.

Can it be repaired....what ever this issue is. And if it can be, then is it possible to give a step b
 
By step instructional to? Please...... zI need my phone and am not crazy about using my sisters.

These phones mostly seem to come with this random reboot crap. I've had, know people personally who have it, and seen tons on the web about it.

Do you live on the edge of service, or somewhere it goes from 1x to 3G coverage a lot? It seems that may have something to do with it.

Since I'm not gonna tell you to move for an $80 phone :p, I'll try some other ideas. :D


Do you have a computer, or wifi from your phone?

Backup ALL the stuff you want to keep (contacts, txt whatever)


If you can, go download this TouchNav-1.3-ext3.zip Thats a new recovery. it wont change what you see and see stuff on the phone, its a seperate area you start up in when you hold some buttons down and start the phone. It lets you make a backup of the phones.

So, download that, rename it to "update.zip" WITHOUT the quotes. make sure its on you sdcard.

Turn your phone off. Hold down the Vol up + Menu buttons then press power while your still holding those. You should now be in a thing called "system recovery v3" or something like that. go down to "wipe data factory reset" pick it. it should install the update.zip for you

reboot into the recovery to make sure its there.

Then download this DeodexedMeritRoot.zip

its a copy of the system folders and files, so hopefully it may get you straightened out. i made that, and my reboots stopped with it. i didn't get as many as you though.

Boot into your recovery, click "install zip from sdcard" scroll down to DeodexedMeritRoot.

If everythign goes ok reboot and check how it works. it will take a while to boot up so dont panic, just let it chill.

its not really a lot, it just seems it.

download two files
go into recovery twice
let it do the hard work.

If that doesnt work, theres other stuff to try.


NO GAURANTEES OR ANYTHINg. and make sure you backup all your stuff on the phone (apps, contacts, txts, etc). It wont delete anything on your sdcard, so music and pics should be fine.

Yea, got it dowmloaded; so now ....how do I go and rename my file? (I am going to do this... :)
 
is it on your phone or a computer?

on the phone you should just be able to go to the file long press on it and a popup should come up with options. if not, download ES File Explorer off the market and it will let you do that.


lol dont be nervous, it sounds like a lot at first but you should be fine.

Just rename that first file(The recovery)

and DONT unzip either of them, just follow my other post.

Think my kids are a bit concerned lol Ive 2 phones and notebooks on each side of me.

Thinking if all this goes well, Im gonna try my luck rooting sis's Dynamic and kids dads LG L55c (if its possible) they both have gottn interested in all of this as well. .:proud:

The L55c needs a haulover. Cant complain, it works when in a bind....as long as you slide it open (Kids thought it neeeded to swim wirh the fish)

To answer that questiom, Im doing it by phone....its all thats here other than my boys xbox360.
 
So as long as my stuff is backed up to google account, its ok?

And Deodexed/MeritRoot/zip will root my phone? Or I still have to master that?

yeah you can pull it back off google. you can export contacts to sdcard too.
and your worst case scenario its on the backup you made.

Yeah itll be rooted, but still the same as you got, so you can go in and delete stuff you dont want.

Finally a minute of quietness lol

downloaded file, renamed it, but when pushed menu, volume + then power......I get took to the system recovery, got it to dsta factory reset it wouldn't allow me to choose it.

Tried going through phones menu and was told it couldn't find the zip on the SD... Its there, why's it not seeing it?

Yeah thats ok. as long as its in the main folder part, no like a download folder.

So you renamed touchnav to update.zip ?

do you mean i the system recovery it wont let you select wipedata? or that that when you hit wipe data you cant pick update?

On the merits when you do that it should automatically install the update once you press it.

But if yours has an "install update from sdcard" or something like that, pick that.

when your in es, scroll to updatezip and long press so a menu comes up, go down to properties and check if the file size is right (if it says 0 or something thats no good).

not seeing it is weird.

I mean that when the screen comes up and I get it over to factory restore cant do squat to select it.
Going through the settings it says it cant find it.

ok, I see what the deal it. Its there, its saying it's. failing because it can't read it on the sd card, then says something about being in a document??

Sooooo........what did I do wrong? Better yet, how do I fix it so it can go where it's supposed to be? :hmmmm2::dontknow:

Yay! Finally have it figured out and done.
Now........on to rooting (I think this is what makes me nervous haha!)

I'll keep you updated!

Ok, Got the first step down and out the way, moved on to rooting like planned. Came to a stop.


I'm being told its aborted bad zip?
Not sure why or what to do so Im stopping right where Im at until I get a chance to go over it with you. Pretty sure its something Im doing....or havent done right, but Im positive it'll get lined out. Good news is Im not nervous anymore... just really excited.

So yea (damn, lol I was so close!) hopeful still yet tho

Bad zips can happen. if its a zip you know works, but it says bad zip, it is usually just the download didnt go cleanly. so you're actually doing it right, just sometimes downloads dont work out perfect.

Say hun. Question, Why in the world would it not authorize my download? I was able to last night when I attempted the first time.

I'm not real sure what is going on. When I am able to get it to download and go to install this is the message I'm getting in return:

---installing :/sdcard/update.zip
Finding update packages....
Opening update package...
E: cannot open /sdcard/update.zip
(bad)

Installation aborted.....


then it goes back to asking to boot recovery, boot device and Power off.

Not sure wth I'm doing wrong but its apparently something I'm messing up at doing. Maybe not enough room on my sd to download the complete zip? (But when I download it, Iget a message stating its downloaded successfully ) I'm confused now, and at another standstill

Youre trying to install update zip which should be the revoery one.

What you want is "install zip from sdcard" then you get to scroll through and pick whatever zip file you want
