In call volume pathetic...speaker phone volume is LOUD. What am I doing wrong?

Phone call volume is very low, when up all the way. The speaker phone function, however, is speaker warping loud....so I know the phone is capable of better. Am I setting it wrong somewhere? Is there a general Droid manual somewhere? I'll be googling but perhaps someone here knows.....

it may seem weird, but i had to hold the phone lower on my ear than i would have thought necessary. try moving it down (the speaker is REALLLLY thin and has a "just right" spot for call volume) and see if it helps.
