inbound/outbound call sound problems

I am having a strange problem with my phone, on in-bound calls my phone rings, when I answer the call I cannot hear anything, yet when I put on speaker mode or connect the headphones, I can hear everything. Similarly on out-bound calls, I cannot hear anything (even the phone ringing on the other end), yet speaker phone and head phones work. I have had this phone for about 8 months. This started happening yesterday.
Am I looking at a defective phone or some software glitch. How can I fix this issue? I have tried the battery pull already.

Sounds like the built in speaker in the headset has gone out.

Ringtones and media play out the Speaker on the back (Near the bottom), and that's also the speaker used for the speakerphone function.

Sorry, but I think this is a hardware issue with the phone.
